#ImBeautyInspired What About You?

IMG_5733

So I’ve been a little busy and missing in action for a while but it’s definitely for a good reason. I am excited to announce the completion of my upcoming book, “#ImBeautyInspired a Keepsake Journal of Original Beauty Quotes & Affirmations!” The release date will be around December 15, 2014. I wrote this book because I want to empower young women and girls to embrace beauty from the inside out. I want them to understand, “beauty is not in the eye of the beholder; beauty is in the mind of the beholder!”

#ImBeautyInspired is not just a keepsake journal of beauty quotes and affirmations; it is a movement to empower young women and girls to embrace their inner beauty. It all started with my passion for writing and my love for beauty. After many years of questioning what’s my purpose in life, I created my blog Beauty School Scarlet.

The blog started with product reviews and a focus on outer beauty but I soon realized that inspiration for inner beauty was missing. So I began looking for daily beauty quotes to inspire my community of followers and soon discovered quotes about inner beauty were limited so I began to write my own.

IMG_5315

As soon as I shared the first couple of beauty quotes, I received an overwhelming response of positive feedback. It was then I realized I needed to write a book to inspire young women and girls. And that was how #ImBeautyInspired was created.

However, I have not stopped there; I have also created an eight-week afterschool program for young girls and teens to empower them to embrace beauty from the inside out. The young women and girls of today have embraced a negative self-image courtesy of role models in T.V. music and sometimes their home life. I believe that it is up to women of influence, etiquette and self-confidence to spread and teach the positive lesson of what it means to truly embrace their unique inner beauty. This program is designed to help address specific problems to solve confidence with peer pressure through interactive seminars, guest role models, and hands on beauty DIY’s along with confidence building. This will help to ensure that the girls feel significant, valued, reassured, in control and worthy. It offers her a chance to be heard and gain praise as well as recognition.

I’m currently looking to partner with schools, churches and afterschool programs to make this program a nationwide success. If you are interested in learning more information about the #imbeautyinspired program, you can email me at info@beautyschoolscarlet.com.

This is not something that I can accomplish alone; I need your help! The power of word of mouth is great but the power of social media is greater! Please join me in the #ImBeautyInspired movement starting with Twitter, FB and IG – follow me and use the hash tag #ImBeautyInspired to share how beauty inspires you! For example…#ImBeautyInspired because I am fearless!

Next, share the movement with your friends and family and be sure to tell them to share with their connections too. Together, we can make a difference and empower young women and girls to embrace their inner beauty and become their very own celebrity!

Feel free to take pictures and videos as well but make sure you always use the hash tag #ImBeautyInspired. There will be twitter chats schedule in the future along with more things to come. #ImBeautyInspired because I have you in my life to support this movement! Thank you in advance!

Always,

Renee

Highlight, Illuminate, Glow

A few weeks ago during our cold winter spell in the Chicago area, I had an awesome girl’s day at Mojo Spa in Chicago and it was an AMAZING day to say the least!

IMG_2308

Mojo Spa is cool spa where all the products are handmade. It all started with Amanda Kezios’s quest for the perfect lip balm. With her talents as a personal chef, she turned her passion into a business. She has created over 200 products with natural food ingredients and aromatherapy blends made with positive affirmations and healing crystals.

We popped in for manicures and pedicures. We were lucky they had a time to squeeze us in. Delia and Nikki were ready and set to make our nails and toes look new again.

The resident Makeup Artist Chelsea offered us a complimentary makeover with our service. She was very pleasant and chose a good selection of colors for our skin tones.

IMG_3415

The Red Velvet Lipstick was my fave because red is my signature color. But today, I am going to tell you about the lluminata Illuminating Herbal Makeup, so check out the deats in The Glam It or Slam it.

IMG_3414

Here’s the Glam: It is an herbal infused formula mixed with all kinds of goodness to help heal and rejuvenate the skin. It’s a 3-in-1 multifunctional product that primes, moisturizes and illuminates! It has light reflecting particles, which gives you a glow and highlight! The best part is, a little goes a long way and you can wear it alone or underneath your makeup. And if that was not enough…it’s handmade and smells some kind of amazing (but not overpowering). Oh yeah, drum roll please…it’s great for all skin tones (no ashy look here) and skin types!

IMG_3412IMG_3411

The Slam: Insert happy face here 🙂 because I love everything about this product! Plus we had so much fun at Mojo Spa and it was something that we really needed. Thank goodness for snow days, good friends and great customer service!

My final grade for the lluminata Illuminating Herbal Makeup is totally a 5 out of 5 smooches…MUAH! If you are interested in purchasing the lluminata Illuminating Herbal Makeup it is $25, at mojospa.com or schedule a spa day with a makeover at Mojo Spa in Chicago… trust me, you won’t be sorry you’ll be refreshed… Happy Illuminating!

Dark Circles, Puffiness and Tired Eyes Be Gone

Last summer I was on the hunt to try a new brand of cosmetics, so off to Sephora I went. As luck would have it, there were two different brand representatives ready to assist me! My first stop was Laura Mercier for a quick touch up of powder, concealer and blush. The next brand was Marc Jacobs for a foundation match, mascara and lipstick. With so many products and so many choices, I didn’t know which brand to choose. As I walked around the store, I narrowed it down to what I needed the most. The winner was Laura Mercier!

IMG_2606

Laura Mercier is the creator of the brand and a world-renowned makeup artist. She is the personal makeup artist to many celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker and Julia Roberts. She is best known for accentuating one’s natural beauty to create a flawless look. She started training as a painter at the age of 17. At some point, she decided to switch her talents from the canvas to the face. In 1996 she created her brand for women of all ages and skin types.

IMG_2607

Now that you have a little background information on the brand, let me share the product I am reviewing. Today, I am reviewing the Secret Concealer. Here is the Glam: This concealer is high in pigment and helps to cover my dark circles from long sleepless nights. It does not settle into the fine lines around my eye area and it brightens to help diffuse the dark circles. It is long lasting, a little moisturizing but not oily looking. It is super easy to apply and a little goes a long way! It’s a natural look with a natural glow.

IMG_2609

Here’s the Slam: When I applied it with a concealer brush, it was a little harder to blend and it looked a little cakey. However, I was able get a flawless look by dabbing a little on my finger and blending it that way.

IMG_2608

In the past, my concealer of choice was MAC. Now, I love the Secret Concealer by Laura Mercier. My final grade is 5 out of 5 smooches…MUAH. If you are interested in purchasing this product, it is offered at Sephora and luxury department stores for $23.00. It is available in 12 shades and it will last even longer with the Translucent Loose Setting Powder. Happy concealing!

Glam it or Slam it?

A few weeks ago I opened one of my beauty box subscriptions and I found a little red sample of Stila calling my name! And of course, I had to try it because after all…red is my signature lip color ;-).

But before I give you my review and final grade, I want you to tell me if this color is a Glam it or a Slam it? What are your thoughts??? Do I Glam it up and rock the red or Slam it down and never wear it again? My inquiring mind wants to know!

Beauty Tips for Winter Allergy Eyes

So, I woke up this morning with a swollen eye :-(.  I applied 3 different eye creams to get the swelling down by about 5%. I was a little worried so I called the eye doctor for the first available appointment as I did not want it to get any bigger because the vain side of me has 3 events this week and I have to represent my brand. LBVS! (The swelling has gone down since this morning but you can still see it a little in the photo below).

IMG_1915

I had an early afternoon appointment and my diagnosis is winter allergies! Really??? I did not know there was such a thing but Dr. Reynolds informed me that mold is still very big in the winter, dust will always be a problem and allergies can be ongoing!

Here are a few tips that she shared with me today:

  1. Mold is forever present in the most unnoticeable ways.
  2. Clean the faucet in your face bowl; it can harbor mold. Use a cotton ball with bleach to keep it clean.
  3. Clean the showerhead as well. The little black stuff you see around the showerhead that builds up is mold.
  4. Clean all your drains as well.  Again…mold can build up.
  5. The black stuff around your window when you open it…mold.
  6. Clean your makeup brushes! Wash your brushes when you wash your hair; this way, you will never forget. (This tip is from Big Girl Cosmetics).
  7. Your furnace can push out dust. Clean your filters and dust often.
  8. If your symptoms continue, see a doctor.

IMG_1918

Dr. Reynolds suggested that I use a little ice for the swelling; over the counter allergy meds such as Claritin or Zyrtec and use my eye drops because of my dry eyes.

OMG…I didn’t realize that winter allergies existed like this let alone all the different areas where can mold hide. I am thankful that Dr. Reynolds continues to educate me. It helps me and I hope that it helps you too! If you live in the Chicago area, stop by and visit Concept Eye Care for your next eye appointment.

Give it to me Straight

It’s been a little over a year since I have been wearing my hair natural. I have grown out my relaxer to be chemical free and healthy…WooHoo!

During this journey, I tried a lot of products to prevent hair breakage and maintain one texture of hair. You see, when you transition your hair, you can have curly, straight and wavy pieces which, can be very frustrating because you don’t know how to wear your hair. During this process, you can also experience a lot of breakage because the relaxed hair is damaged and growing out and the curly hair is stronger hair. When the curly hair grows more and more, it can make the relaxed hair snap and break.

During my transition, I tried new products from the Ojon Super Sleek line. It is a four-step process with the Super Sleek Smoothing Shampoo, Super Sleek Smoothing Conditioner, Super Sleek Hair Straightening Treatment and the Super Sleek Restorative Blowout Protector. I was so excited because I have been using Ojon for a long time and the products have helped me maintain healthy hair throughout the years and I knew these products would not be any different!

IMG_3870

So, I purchased the products in Spring of 2013 and I have been testing it since then. Yes, it has taken me over 6 months to test this product line and I will let you know why in just a moment.

As I mentioned earlier, when you transition your hair you will have all types of textures going on from curly, wavy and straight and it is frustrating to say the least! I was not ready to wear my hair curly so the only alternative was to wear it straight and I needed product to help me achieve my style because by the 6th month, blow-drying was taking too long and I was burning my hair by applying too much heat. I needed help!

IMG_1711

Here’s the glam: The Super Sleek Shampoo, Conditioner and Restorative Blowout Protector helped me maintain my straight hair for the first 5 months. The shampoo is sulfate free so it prevents dryness and it is very moisturizing. The conditioner is moisturizing as well and was easy to comb through my hair. The blow-drying cream was awesome! It kept my hair straight, smooth and sleek. I loved my hair until the sixth month during the core summer months! My hair swelled and it did not stay as straight even with the blow-drying cream :-(. So, I implemented the fourth step with the Super Sleek Straightening Treatment and I was in hair heaven! My blow-drying time was cut in half and my hair felt like silk. I was so excited to read that the product last up to 30 shampoos…FTW!

IMG_1709

IMG_1712

IMG_1714

I was a little nervous because the straightening treatment is like a keratin treatment but without all the bad stuff and I have tried a keratin treatment before and it did not work. By the second try, my hair was falling out. It was a disaster to say the least.  But this was different I was convinced and I loved it until it was time for the third application.

IMG_1715

Here is the slam: Right before the third application, my hair started breaking off. I have a major breakage in the front and a section in the back 🙁 Whomp, Whomp! How do I know that it was the straightening treatment? Well, it is the only product I have been using, I have not tried anything new and my hair stylist who is also a hair instructor said products like this are not made multi-ethnic hair. Even though the product is free from formaldehyde, lye and cysteine…anything that is like a keratin treatment is not good.

IMG_1708

Needless to say, I did not have her do a third application and my results are inconclusive for the Super Sleek line by Ojon. Here’s what’s interesting…I found out that the straightening treatment was discontinued for thick/coarse hair but I did not find out why. I am still using the shampoo, conditioner and blow-dry protector because I don’t think it is harmful and it worked for the first five months.

On my last visit to the hair salon, I got my hair trimmed to camouflage the breakage and it has been not been breaking since then. I will certainly keep you posted. I guess in this case, I took one for the team!
