#ImBeautyInspired to Love Me and Live Free; #WomensLives Matter

Logo-550_0

#ImBeautyInspired to be a part of the #WomensLives initiative, a media partnership between Public Radio International (PRI) and SheKnows Media, BlogHer’s parent company which, seeks to change the conversation in news media because #WomensLives matter.

I will be sharing stories and writing post about something that is near and dear to my heart, women’s issues. It is my hope to bring more awareness and support for important issues such as equal pay for women, mental illness and domestic violence.

Unfortunately, these are issues that society tends to shun away from but through this initiative they will have a voice and be part of important conversations.

The topic for today is domestic violence. I’m not sure if you knew this or not but the domestic violence Super Bowl PSA was a real 911 call. #WomensLives matter; find out what it was like for one woman as she shares her story. http://c.bher.co/81

My life matters and #ImBeautyInspired to love me, live free and share my story below.

I decided to share an excerpt from my recently published book, “#ImBeautyInspired A Keepsake Journal of Original Beauty Quotes & Affirmations!” because I was a witness of domestic violence, I was a victim of domestic violence and now I am a survivor of domestic violence. For most women, domestic violence usually starts at a young age with self-esteem issues and I wrote my book because I want to empower young women and girls to embrace their inner beauty. I want them to understand that beauty is not in the eye of the beholder; beauty is in the mind of the beholder! And they will gain an understanding of this and more through the interactive journal.

Here is an excerpt from Chapter 1: The Beauty of Strength!

Beauty is being naturally you; baring it all without filters!

Today, I am being naturally me and baring it all without filters! I am sharing a side of me that I have rarely share publicly because I hope to bring awareness to my readers and I believe that beauty starts from the inside out.

As a child, I watched my father abuse my mother, as a teen I was abused physically by a high school boyfriend and verbally as an adult. Today, I realize that I am beautiful and love is not abusive!

I wrote a poem from the heart in the late 90’s as a dedication to my younger self and any woman who has experienced domestic violence.

This is not just a poem from what I have seen, heard or experienced, it is a poem for anyone who has been affected by domestic violence or someone who is in denial. I pray and hope that this helps someone to seek shelter and help.

Love to the Limit

As your fist hits my face

Your imprints are left upon my cheek

As I scream in an outrage

You laugh to keep from feeling guilt

I LOVE YOU! I scream

You laugh once again and reply with a kick

I’m sorry, I’m sorry

Falling to my knees

Begging and pleading

But you say nothing

And I think why does this have to be me

Your brain filled with insanity

I don’t know what’s next

You punch me in the stomach

And continue with vital threats

As I lie on the floor pain bruised and in pain

No movement from my body

Just my blood and your shame

I try to weep for help

But there’s no one near

I start to grasp for breath

But you choose not to hear

You turn your back and walk away

Leaving me to be

I knew this was the end

How could you do this to me?

I did nothing but love you

And what did you return to me

An act of hatred

Why was that so hard for me to see?

Domestic violence is a disease and if you suffer from it, seek help and call the hotline 1.800.799.7233. Let’s make a difference and start by answering the following questions: How can we help women who suffer from domestic violence? How can we help our young girls avoid being a victim? How will you get involved? Start by commenting below and being a part of the conversation on Twitter and Facebook using the hashtag #WomensLives. Have a day filled with strength!

Does Racism Still Exists?

To The Beauty School Scarlet Community,

The following post is not about beauty; it’s about the prejudice in this world. This is something I need to write about. I’m sorry but I cannot tolerate disregard for a person’s race, creed, color or gender. I cannot tolerate bullying and I cannot tolerate racial profiling…. I just can’t!

My ancestors marched for my freedom, I experienced racism at a young age and I can no longer sit by and say nothing.

The beauty in life is that we are all created equal but unfortunately the recent actions of people who are supposed to protect and serve paint a very different picture. The disrespect for black human lives saddens my heart and brings tears to my eyes. There has to be a solution before we ALL self-destruct!

Hatred is an ugly thing. #BlackLivesMatter #BlackBoysMatter #WeAllMatter

I wrote this poem in the early 90’s and the words are still relevant today! It’s 2014 and I am asking myself if racism still exists? This poem is not a white or black issue it is a mankind worldwide problem that must change.

Questions to the Man By Renee B

RIP to the lives we have lost due to race, creed, color or gender, bullying and senseless violence!

Fashion, Beauty and Makeup #TargetStyle

OMG… Last night I attended the Ready, Set, Targetstyle event hosted by the awesome Zanna Roberts Rassi! Just in case you are not into fashion and beauty or you’ve have been depriving yourself from the latest issue of Marie Claire, before we get started, let me give you the beauty 411 on her so next time you will know! 🙂

IMG_6147

Zanna is the Marie Claire Senior Fashion Editor, E! News Correspondent, Today Show Fashion Contributor and Project Runway All Stars Mentor! She’s styled A-list celebrities worked with major brands and has hosted a few fashion shows on TV. She is fashion! I could go on and on about how her jumpsuit was everything, how much I loved her on Project Runway and how she said she loved my necklace; but I’ll digress! This post isn’t about her so I’ll move on and get back on track. LOL

Ready, Set, Targetstyle was an event filled with fun, fashion and beauty; three of my favorite things!

The fun started with the emcee Courtney Kornegay creator of the blog Courtwalk. He gave us life and energy for days with his awesome personality. He and Zanna were the perfect fashion match!

IMG_6144

The fashion was set with three fashion bloggers styling their muses with the classic item for the season, a white shirt. They had five minutes to make their muses fierce with host Zanna setting the scene for the look we were about to see. Yes, these girls were making it happen and pulling looks together to make us cheer them on and influence the judges to vote for them.

IMG_6145IMG_6143

The beauty was on and popping with Pixi by Petra. Four makeup stations were available for anyone who wanted a 5-minute makeover, compliments of the Target Beauty Concierge! What’s a Target Beauty Concierge you ask? Oh my, have a seat and let me give you the beauty rundown.

IMG_6064

It’s a fairly new program that started as a test and has now expanded in the higher volume stores. Target has hired and scheduled a beauty advisor to be present on key shopping days to answer your beauty questions and meet your beauty needs from skin consultations to makeovers. Mmm hmm, you better check your local Target to see if there is a Beauty Concierge and when they are scheduled. LOL

IMG_6146

IMG_4589I had a chance to have a seat and get a quick 5-minute face beat by the amazing Dee Bastista a Beauty Concierge at the City Target on State Street. He touched up my makeup by enhancing my eyes, shinning my lips and highlighting my cheeks! I loved my look and I can’t wait to purchase some Pixi by Petra products soon!

IMG_6149IMG_6081IMG_6138

This was truly a night filled with fun, fashion and beauty and I can’t wait for the next event. Target if you are reading this, that was a hint to have another event and soon because #imbeautyinspired! MUAH

I had the pleasure of hosting the grand opening event on Mother’s Day at Curl Kitchen a natural hair beauty boutique.

It was a day filled with special memories for the grandmothers, mothers and daughters who were in attendance. They had a choice of receiving a curl coaching session valued at $75, door prizes, a headshot compliments of Paulina Fadrowska of fotoinna and some great beauty advice from yours truly on Skincare 101 – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Behind the Ingredients.”

There was food, fun and an atmosphere filled with beauty! The attendees were there to learn and celebrate the opening of this beautiful beauty boutique filled with natural hair care products. Generations of beautiful women walked away with some awesome swag bags filled with hair products and headshots to capture the moment.

The grand opening of Curl Kitchen was a big success and I am honored that I was asked to host the event. If you did not get a chance to attend the grand opening, head over to the boutique for some natural hair goodies and other beauty finds! The exact location is 1926 S Wabash in Chicago, IL. My Aveda Experience

I was recently invited to spend some time at the new Aveda store in Orland Park, IL with my blogger boo Terez – author of 11 Beautiful Tools and Founder of the Business of Beauty Collective. We had an afternoon of pampering, surprises and learning more about what Aveda has to offer.

IMG_3889

So I must admit its has been a while since I have been inside of an Aveda store. Nothing against the brand, it’s just been a long time. Anywho… I was excited about tagging along because I wanted to see what I have been missing!

Apparently I have been missing a lot because they have incorporated some cool things such as Chakra readings. Your Chakra is where your energy comes together from the head to the toe; it gives you balance! Yes, you can now go to Aveda and receive a complimentary Chakra reading. They will show you which of your Chakra’s are out of balance, how to bring them back to life, back to reality as well as how to de-stress.

IMG_3866

Your body will tell you what you are missing and what you need based on the colors you see and words that speak to you. I picked harmony, wisdom and insight. You will then smell the scents that go with the cards you picked and the one that appeals the most to you is the one that your body has been craving. My body has been craving number 7, which was wisdom and Terez was number 6, which was insight.

IMG_3870

After you pick the chakra that you are missing, you receive a massage in the area where you feel the most stress. My stress areas are my neck and shoulders and the Stress Fix line was very relaxing and de-stressing. Yes…I am so here for what I have been missing!

IMG_3873

Next, I received a hair consultation based on my hair type and concerns. It was determined that I needed products to nourish my dry hair. The hair specialist suggested that I use Brilliant shampoo and conditioner with dry remedy hair mask and shine. I tried the shine in the store and it gave my hair life! I’m so in love!!!

IMG_3882

IMG_3887

IMG_3886

I also received a skin consultation and based on my skin type and concerns, it was suggested that I use Botanical Kinetics – cleanser, toner and moisturizer along with Tourmaline Charged Radiant Skin Refiner for my anti-aging concerns along with Green Science eye cream.

IMG_3880

Aveda also offers makeovers too but since I came I with makeup and I was hungry, I decided to pass on that but Terez opted in and received a makeover while I received my skin consultation.

IMG_3888

It was certainly a day filled with beauty, relaxation and fun girl time something that we both needed and enjoyed! If I had to rate my Aveda experience, I would give it 5 out of 5 smooches…MUAH! The Orland Park team really went above and beyond. I was surprised and in awe of all of this newness!

IMG_3903

But don’t fret, because you can head over and receive one or all of the consultations free of charge. However, I must warn you…you will not leave empty handed because you will want to purchase some or all of the products that are suggested for you because they are just that good! Good luck because you will need that in order to refrain from overindulgence with purchasing products! Happy shopping…MUAH

My Black is Beautiful Brand Ambassador Search

Earlier this month I entered the My Black is Beautiful Contest to be a Brand Ambassador. #MBIB helps to empower young girls/women to embrace her beauty, love the skin she is in and to be her best self! And last week I received an email stating, “Congratulations! You’ve been selected as a Semi-Finalist in the My Black is Beautiful Ambassador Search!” I was over the moon with excitement and cried like a baby…LOL.

IMG_3646

I was overwhelmed and inside of my emotions because my brand and passion is to Empower and Inspire Women to understand that beauty is not complicated or complex; it is simplistic and you can only be a true beauty if you embrace your beauty from the inside out! It is important for us to teach our young girls at an early age that she is beautiful because she is so impressionable. She will mimic what she sees and if she doesn’t have a positive image to look up to or good role model, she may have low self-esteem or not have the ability to live up to her full potential.

IMG_3649

As a Brand Ambassador, I will be able to be a part of the campaign, join forces with other amazing women and continue to make a difference with young women and girls! It is important that young black girls feel significant, valued, reassured, in control and worthy! It is important that she understands that “Her Black is Beautiful!

Please join me on this amazing journey this Saturday as I move on to the next step in the process for a live interview! There will be musical performances, celebrity appearances, inspiring conversations and awesome giveaways! The event will take place at Walmart, 1300 Des Plaines Ave. Forest Park, IL at 12:00 PM. If you are unable to make it, don’t worry…click any of the following the links>>> MBIB Facebook, #MBIB Twitter and #MBIB Instagram and join the conversation!

Fashion Fair, the largest black-owned cosmetics company in the world has made a major announcement! The legendary brand is rebranding and they are starting at the top. They have selected Amy S. Hilliard, as the new President over the Johnson Publishing owned beauty brand. She will be responsible for overall operations of the company and growing the brand in sales, marketing and building retail partnerships.

Amy Hilliard headshot

How exciting for Fashion Fair to have so much newness over the past few months! Last fall, they hosted an amazing soirée, “Say Yes to Life, Love and Beauty” for the re-launch of the website and debut of the short film “Say Yes”, they named Celebrity Makeup Artist Tia Dantzler as the new Creative Director and now Amy S. Hilliard as the President for the brand!

Amy, a Detroit Native comes to the brand with a wealth of knowledge and experience. She has served as President, CEO and Founder of The ComfortCake Company LLC, the maker of “poundcake so good it feels like a hug!” ComfortCake has also been featured on several cooking and news shows as well as national publications. She owns The Hilliard Group Inc., a strategic marketing consulting, product development and speaking firm. And she has held prominent roles at L’Oreal for Soft Sheen Products, Burrell Communications, The Pillsbury Company and The Gillette Company just to name a few.

The CEO of Johnson Publishing Desiree Rodgers says “We are excited to bring Amy into the Fashion Fair family. Amy comes to us with an extensive background in marketing and business development, and we look forward to having her expertise and leadership as we re-launch the Fashion Fair Cosmetics brand and continue our business growth.”

“I am sincerely honored to take over the role of President for Fashion Fair Cosmetics,” added Hilliard. “This company holds an iconic role in the African-American community. Personally meeting Mrs. Eunice Johnson as she launched the brand was historic, and I am excited to play a role in the company’s growth and expansion globally.”

In 2013, Fashion Fair’s motto was “Say Yes to Life, Love and Beauty.” In 2014 I believe the motto should be, “Say Yes to Change, Growth and Beauty!” It will be exciting to see the new ideas, growth and transformation that Amy S. Hilliard will bring to the brand in her new position as the President starting on February 24th.

Congratulations Amy, I wish you much success in your new role with Fashion Fair!
