Tips & Tricks to Finding the Perfect Red Lip

Beauty School Scarlet

For those of you who know me, you know that red is my signature lip color. I have been wearing various shades of red since my mother allowed me to wear lipstick. So when I started my blog in 2012, it was a no-brainer for me, my logo had to have red lips.

Over the years of wearing this power color, I have come across so many women who are afraid to wear it or just don’t know how.

If I had a dollar for every woman that said, “I can’t wear a red lipstick because it’s too bright for me. Or I can’t find the right color…” I would totally be a millionaire by now. No, really I would because it’s been that many.

To all the ladies who cringe at the color red or dread shopping for a red lippie, I am here to set you free! By the time you finish reading this post, you will officially call me your, “Red Lippie Sheroe or The Fairy Godmother of Red Lips.” Whatever you choose it’s all right with me just as long as you’re no longer afraid to sport the infamous red lip!

Here are my rules to finding your perfect match…

  1. Yes You Can: If you can wear a red polish (or for that matter anything red), you can wear red lipstick. The next time you go shopping for a red lippie, take your favorite red polish, compare the colors and find a match. You’ll be surprised with your findings.
  1. Know Your Reds: There are several colors of reds with different undertones. Find a red that will compliment your skin tone. Fair skin with pink undertones look for a red/pink. Dark skin with red undertone, look for a red/blue. Medium skin with yellow undertone, look for a red/orange.
  1. Start Off Slow: If you’ve always wanted to try a red but you’re a little nervous because you think it’s too much, take baby steps. Check out the shear lipsticks and slowly graduate to more pigment. Burt’s Bees makes a great shear red.

IMG_1882

  1. Mix And Match: Sometimes it takes mixing 2-3 shades of red to find the perfect match. It may take a few tries before you find what you really like.
  1. Layer, Layer and Layer: Build the colors by layering. Start with a red lip marker or liner, add a lipstick and if you want a little shine, add some gloss too. The reds don’t have to be exact but it’s best if they are from the same color family.
  1. Try It Before You Buy It: Before you purchase clothes you try them on, right? Well, the same thing goes for lipstick. Try it on your lips not your hands because you’re going to wear it on your lips anyway. Besides, your hands and lips are two different shades and you won’t get the same results. Unless you’re a makeup artist or a pro with colors, you’ll be left with disappointment and all mad at me (and I’m just not here for that). So, I beg of you to try it on your lips!

Side Note: Make sure the Beauty Advisor sanitizes the tester before you try it on.

Advice: When you find your favorite red buy more than one. You can never have enough and brands are constantly adding and deleting shades. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Trust me I know!  Smashbox discontinued my favorite lip marker and my life has never been the same.

So there you have it, tips and tricks to finding the best red lips. What are you waiting for? Get your squad together, schedule a beauty play date, follow the steps above and pucker up baby! MUAH

Travel Friendly Beauty Tips

Do you ever have trouble packing the right beauty products for your vacation? Do you get confused on what to take and what to leave? Do you have to check your bag EVERY single trip because you just have too many products? Here are 7 beauty tips to help you overcome this problem ☺.

The travel section is your new bestie: If you are traveling for spring break, shop for your beauty products in the travel section. Every store has one these days. From the specialty beauty store to the drug store; you can always find what you need! The travel section offers sizes that are TSA approved. You will never have to check your bag again!

IMG_5580

Ziploc your snacks not your beauty products: Forget the Ziploc bags. Get a plastic see through bag from a drug store and fill up with your fave travel sized products. A see through makeup bag holds more than a Ziploc bag and they last longer! As a Beauty Blogger, I can never get all my travel size products in a Ziploc bag as I am always adding more…LOL. Hit up your local drug or beauty store to find a clear bag with travel size bottles.

IMG_5589

Space Savers: Use the space inside your bag for non-liquid items. Deodorant, pressed powder, toothbrush and liquids like contact lens solution or medication. Yes, this is okay, the TSA will not tell you but I will. You can have travel size contact lens solution or medication inside of your suitcase and get through security. Trust me, a TSA Agent shared this tip with me!

IMG_5590

Double duty products can condense your load: Multi-functional beauty products will give you more room. Try products like a makeup palette with eye shadow and blush or eye shadow, blush and lips. Trust me, you are not going to use everything in your makeup kit on vacation. If you do, then you are a bigger makeup junkie than me and I’m not sure I can help you. Buy makeup wipes. But make sure they cleanse, tone and moisturize so you do not have bring a cleanser, toner and moisturizer; it saves time and money.

IMG_3311

Perfume on the go: Take your signature scent and add it to a perfume atomizer. It is the perfect little travel size gadget to carry your favorite scent on the go.

IMG_3556

Take advantage of the freebies: If you don’t have sensitive skin or if you are not picky, leave your shower gels and shampoos behind. You can use what the hotel offers or you can shop when you get to your destination. Most hotels offer decent brands for shower gels and shampoos for free.

IMG_1057

Lost and found: Always have 2 of everything in case you have to check your bag or the airline misplaces (I mean loses) your suitcase! Keep one set at home and one in your suitcase. If the airline loses your bag with your favorite skincare inside or you leave it at the hotel, no worries, you have an extra set at home.

So there you have it; my top beauty travel tips! I hope this has helped you as much as it as helped me ☺. Enjoy your travels, be safe and have fun!

6 Beauty Tips for Valentine’s Day

Beauty School Scarlet's 6 Beauty Tips for Valentine’s Day

Will you be my Valentine? Yes, No or Maybe?! So he asked you out and you said yes! Check out my 6 beauty tips to add some sugar and spice for your Valentine’s date!

Silky Smooth Satin Skin: Exfoliation is the key to smooth, even skin! The night before the date, exfoliate your skin with a good scrub to remove the dead skin cells. This will even out your skin tone and allow you to have a more flawless look. Say hello to a brighter and glowing complexion that he will not forget. Be sure to use an SPF in the morning, as any exfoliators can make the skin more sensitive to the sun.

Fake Out the Breakout and Belly Bloat: Eat healthier with more fruits and veggies a few weeks before to prevent bloating. Drink plenty of water to hydrate the skin and keep it clear of unnecessary breakouts. There is nothing like a big, huge zit screaming hello on your romantic date. If you should have one, invest in a spot remover to heal that zit quick, fast and in a hurry!

Flirt With A Smile: Whiten Your Teeth, you have a beautiful smile so make sure it shines. You can use the strips from the drug store or splurge on a whitening system. If you can’t get to the store, wear a red lipstick to give the effect of a whiter, brighter smile.

Nail It With A Fresh Mani: Stop and get a mani the day before or do a DIY to save and splurge on something else. If you are going to attempt a DIY, I suggest using nail stickers. “Your nails are like jewels, don’t use them as tools.” – Essie. There’s nothing like a good manicure on a man or a woman. And if you are wearing open-toed shoes, get a pedi too; freshly painted nails show that you take good care of yourself!

Make Yourself Under: Less is more…with makeup that is! Don’t overdo it with the makeup; go for a clean, fresh look. You are not auditioning for a new reality couples show so a full face is not needed here. I suggest a natural shadow, hint of blush, a little mascara and a dab of gloss. Gloss with color is okay but not a bright in color with too much pigment because it can be overkill.

Seduce Him With Your Scent: Don’t overdo it with the perfume. Find a clean, fresh scent that works well with your body chemistry. To help the scent last longer, rub a little Vaseline on your pulse points before you spray your perfume. Focusing on the pulse points ensures you don’t go overboard with the perfume and makes the scent linger, last and make him long for more!

Now that you are completely date ready from head to toe, take some time to relax, relate, release and enjoy your Valentine! MUAH

Tips to Get Free or Low Cost Beauty Services and Products

Are you on a beauty budget? Do you need to find ways to keep up with your beauty routine without paying those high prices? If the answer is yes, keep reading! I’m going to share some secret and not so secret beauty saving tips!

1. Get a Free Mani: Thanks to one of my BFF’s who’s a frugalista…she told me about one of the many times she has gotten a free mani courtesy of Sephora! Yep, that’s right…she goes over to the nail polish bar with her mani tools and uses their polish and remover, polishes all ten fingers and waits for them to dry as she walks around. GENIUS!

IMG_0857

2. Try Before You Buy: You are looking for a new cleanser, mask and moisturizer but you are on a budget and can only afford one. Get some little samples from Sephora to try before you buy. Now, I must warn you that they will not last super long but they may last until the next paycheck. SCORE!IMG_5612

3. Get a Free Makeover: Yes, free! Sephora has beauty brand reps inside the store and they are there to offer makeovers and sell products. Well, the secret is: they don’t charge you for the makeover; they get paid regardless and get credit for the number of products they sell (unless it’s a major event). A Sephora rep will charge you a sitting fee, which goes towards your purchase unless you are looking for something simple like a foundation match. YAASS!IMG_3887

4. Get Spa Services for Next to Nothing: Schedule a service at a beauty school. They offer services for half the price or less than a spa and the students need the practice. They are cleaner and safer than some of the corner nail salons because they have to teach the students to practice safe hygiene standards. So go get your spa on for $10 -$20! CHACHING!IMG_5615

5. Get Free Products: Join the Sephora VIB Club (it’s free to join) and receive free sample size products for every 100 or 500 points. You can also get a little sample package of products on your birthday! YAY!IMG_5616

6. Enter a Beauty Giveaway: Some beauty blogs host giveaways but shefinds.com and beautystat.com usually offer a weekly giveaway. Or you can also follow your favorite brand on FB or IG for beauty contest and giveaways! WINNING!

So there you have it…my tips to get free or low cost beauty services or products! Do you have a fave? What are you going to try first? If you have one to share that I may have missed, comment below! Happy Saving! MUAH

Skincare 101 – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Behind the Ingredients

Skincare 101

There are good ingredients and there are bad ingredients but it’s the bad ingredients that are ugly! Knowing the features and benefits of your skincare products is one thing but understanding the function of the ingredients is another. It can sometimes be overwhelming because in some cases, you have never heard of the ingredient, it is hard to pronounce like some medical terms and there’s not a quick definition to reference.

Today, I am going to share the good, the bad and the ugly behind some of the most popular ingredients.

Coconut oil is moisturizing, nourishing, and anti-aging. The Good: It is so moisturizing, it is great for dry hair/scalp and it helps to nourish damaged hair. It works wonders on extremely dry skin like dermatitis, psoriasis, or eczema.  Most importantly, it can be used as massage oil.

Glycolic Acid, one of the most popular acids is derived from sugar cane. The Good: Anti-aging, clear acne breakouts, even out the skin tone while making the skin brighter, softer and smoother.

Peptides are amino acids also known as protein molecules, which boost the natural production of collagen and elastin. The Good: They help plump the skin and give it elastin as the skin starts to age, wrinkle or sag. Think of an old sweater and how loose and stretchy it gets over time, if you were to apply peptides, the sweater would go back to its original shape as if it were new.

Silicones are derived from plastics; they coat the hair, which does not allow the product to penetrate the hair shaft. The Bad and the Ugly: It can cause buildup and does not prevent breakage; it disguises it.

Silicones have similar properties to rubber and plastic. Do you know what happens to rubber and plastic when you heat them? They burn!!! So when you continuously use products with silicone and apply heat, you can burn and damage the hair. Silicone also clogs the pores, which can cause breakouts on the skin.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is chemical used in detergent, soaps, shower gels and shampoos; it allows the product to foam and lather. The Bad and the Ugly: This ingredient strips the skin of its natural moisture, which causes dryness and irritation to the skin and scalp. It is also known to cause hair loss.

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen (poison). You can usually find this in nail polish and hair straightening/smoothing products (like the Brazilian Blow Out). The Bad and the Ugly: It is known to be an irritant on the skin and cause allergic reactions like dermatitis. The chemical can also cause sensitivity to nose and eyes as well as breathing difficulties.

So there you have it: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Behind The Ingredients! Did anything surprise you? Will you take a closer look at the ingredients during your next beauty excursion? Comment below and share your thoughts…

A Conversation With Celebrity Hairstylist Larry Sims

A few months ago I had the pleasure of meeting Celebrity Hairstylist Larry Sims at an event. I was so intrigued by his personality and story that I had to get an interview. Thankfully he was gracious enough and agreed to have a phone conversation with me!

IMG_2125

Before we start the conversation, here’s a little background information on how Larry Sims started his career. He started as a backup dancer but not just any dancer. He always had a passion for hair so he would style the artist’s hair and makeup backstage. One day someone noticed and passed his name on to Celebrity Hairstylist Ken Paves.

Later, Larry worked as an apprentice for Ken and occasionally filled in for him from time to time. One day, as luck would have it, Ken was not available and Larry was able to fill in to style none other than Victoria Beckham. Yes, that’s right…Larry is the one and only who cut and styled her famous bob hairstyle. The rest is history and needless to say, his client list has grown there.

Now that you have the quick version of his background, sit back and enjoy a conversation with Larry Sims!

BSS: What is your definition of beauty?

LS: Self-confidence, personal style, freedom of expression and being a trendsetter.

BSS: Who was your biggest influence?

LS: As a dancer my biggest influence were the people on the glam squads working on films and videos. Like: Christopher Maldonado – stylist for Aaliyah who passed away was my biggest influence. Oscar James is a huge influence and my mother with her own personal beauty style.

BSS: What advice would you give a cosmetology student who is interested in starting out in the beauty industry?

LS: Do your homework, be around people who are successful and stay humble, perfect your craft and do test shots. Be an apprentice for a stylist so you can learn more.

BSS: When someone is looking for a new hairstylist what are the top 3 tips they should look for?

LS:

–       Read yelp reviews

–       Ask for referrals

–       A great stylist will ask about your lifestyle and history of your hair

BSS: What is the hairstyle trend for 2014?

LS: Natural, textured hair, and hair that is not perfect. More of an editorial look like a messy bun.

BSS: When shopping for hair products, what ingredients should people look for and what should they stay away from?

LS: You don’t necessarily get better results with more expensive products. Stay away from products with additives. Get products with moisture, proteins and protect the hair from heat.

BSS: What is the best way to winterize your hair?

LS: When wearing hats make sure your hair is super moisturized and conditioned.  Avoid hats with wool as they can damage the hairline and break the hair. Use cashmere or silk scarves.

BSS: How can my readers maintain healthy hair at home?

LS: Keep your hair moisturized, do masking with deep moisturizing treatments and use heat protectants.

BSS: You have just launched the Go Pro Curls line, how do you see your brand expanding over the next 3 years?

LS: Go Pro Grow will be launching in 2014 and I want to expand my brand outside of hair. I want to be the Martha Stewart of beauty…candles, bedding, sheets and more.

BSS: Where can my readers find the Go Pro Curls line?

LS: We are in Sally’s Beauty Supply and local beauty supply stores. In 2014 we will be in Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Target, CVS and online.

BSS: Is there any other information that you would like to share?

LS: TV projects are coming and the Go Pro Grow line is launching

BSS: Larry, thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me and sharing your story!

Winter Skin Care Solutions

As much as I would like to wish the winter away, I know that it’s not possible :-(. It is so cold in the Chicago area with the temps at 7 degrees but with a wind-chill factor it feels like a -12 degrees (insert a shivering body and long sigh here) LOL!

With the temperature being so cold, we need to protect our bodies and layer our clothes. We also need to protect our skin from the harsh winter cold and wind-chill. Here are a few of my favorite winter must have products that will keep you moisturized over the next few months!

IMG_1931

My F.A.B. Moisturizer: First Aid Beauty is so F.A.B.  and it is my go to moisturizer! The Ultra Repair Concentrate appears thick but it ‘s not once you emulsify it down in the palm of your hands. A little goes a long way, so this will truly last for quite sometime. It is very soothing to my dry irritated skin because it contains oatmeal, essential oils, botanical antioxidants and reparative ingredients. I love that it is so moisturizing yet lightweight and you can use it on the entire body!!! The best thing is, they have clinical claims that state, “Within 15 minutes of application, skin hydration is improved by 116%.” Just to test it further, let’s see if my dry parched hands see a difference in the picture below (they are very dry because I have been washing them like a crack head and not applying hand cream to moisturize…remember, no judging)…. LOL

IMG_2499

IMG_2494IMG_2497IMG_2498 More Moisture Please: As you can see from the photo above, my hands are so dry that they are peeling and they hurt because I don’t always have time to put on hand cream. The first time I tried Yu-Be, it saved my unappealing dry hands from cracking and peeling; from there I was sold. It gave instant moisture from the Glycerin, it was not greasy, it absorbed into my skin immediately and the Vitamin E and B2 help to heal my very dry damaged skin. I was so exited for the instant gratification that I have been using this as my go to hand cream for a couple of years.

IMG_2311IMG_2313IMG_2315

Yu-Be has stated on their website that the moisturizing cream can be used on the face, lips and body. While I have not tried it on those areas, I would not rule it out!!!

A Drink of Water for My Skin: Boots No7 Beautiful Skin Hydration Mask is like a drink of water for my skin. I use it on a regular basis especially during the winter. It has been my saving grace to give me the boost of moisture that I need!!!

IMG_2729IMG_2743

I apply a thin layer of the mask after cleansing, I leave it on through the night and my skin drinks in the moisture leaving it soft and smooth in the morning!!!

Not only is this product the answer to my thirsty skin; it is very affordable as well.

Moisture Service for My Lips: Be Fine Food Skin Care Lip Serum is by far the best lip serum, balm, cream that I have ever used!!! It contains plant based amino acids and peptides to firm and boosts the skin on the lips; chamomile soothes and safflower seed oil gives moisture.  It also offers UVA protection as well.

IMG_3055

This miracle in a tube brought my pour, dry, painful dehydrated pout back to life overnight!!! A little goes a long way and it is long lasting. I was amazed and relieved all at the same time!!!

My Hair is Thirsty: Being Free Comes Naturally Island Breeze Whip is a moisturizing whip for the hair and or scalp that can be used on wet or dry 2-3 times per week or as needed. It contains Shea and Mango butters, Coconut and Avocado oils as well as Pro Vitamin B 5 just to name a few. It is very moisturizing but no too much that it leaves your hair greasy. It smells wonderful but it is not overpowering. A little goes a long way; it is very lightweight and great for dry scalp. It also gives great shine and it does not build up on the hair toward the middle or end of the week!!!
