Beauty Tips for Winter Allergy Eyes

So, I woke up this morning with a swollen eye :-(.  I applied 3 different eye creams to get the swelling down by about 5%. I was a little worried so I called the eye doctor for the first available appointment as I did not want it to get any bigger because the vain side of me has 3 events this week and I have to represent my brand. LBVS! (The swelling has gone down since this morning but you can still see it a little in the photo below).

I had an early afternoon appointment and my diagnosis is winter allergies! Really??? I did not know there was such a thing but Dr. Reynolds informed me that mold is still very big in the winter, dust will always be a problem and allergies can be ongoing!

Here are a few tips that she shared with me today:

  1. Mold is forever present in the most unnoticeable ways.
  2. Clean the faucet in your face bowl; it can harbor mold. Use a cotton ball with bleach to keep it clean.
  3. Clean the showerhead as well. The little black stuff you see around the showerhead that builds up is mold.
  4. Clean all your drains as well.  Again…mold can build up.
  5. The black stuff around your window when you open it…mold.
  6. Clean your makeup brushes! Wash your brushes when you wash your hair; this way, you will never forget. (This tip is from Big Girl Cosmetics).
  7. Your furnace can push out dust. Clean your filters and dust often.
  8. If your symptoms continue, see a doctor.

Dr. Reynolds suggested that I use a little ice for the swelling; over the counter allergy meds such as Claritin or Zyrtec and use my eye drops because of my dry eyes.

OMG…I didn’t realize that winter allergies existed like this let alone all the different areas where can mold hide. I am thankful that Dr. Reynolds continues to educate me. It helps me and I hope that it helps you too! If you live in the Chicago area, stop by and visit Concept Eye Care for your next eye appointment.

Beauty Week in Review 11.2.13

Beauty Week in Review 11.2.13

Hey Beauty Scholars!!! Welcome to the 3rd edition of the Beauty Week in Review!!! I do realize that this should be the 4th installment but the news in terms of beauty the week before was bleak to say the least…LOL!!! This week is a little livelier; so let’s get this party started!!!

Sephora Americas has a named Calvin McDonald as the new CEO.  Now this is interesting because McDonald comes from Sears Canada where he was the President and CEO. Don’t judge a book a by its cover until you know the whole story :-). McDonald has been very successful in Canada with Sears with positive store comp sales for three quarters in a row for the first time in seven years as well as his past success with other companies!!! So don’t worry Sephora loyalist…the company sounds it’s in great hands with more innovative thinking to come. Stay tuned…I know I will!!! re-launched its site with an ecommerce portion section added this week. The site was previously geared toward social networking and blogging but now, it has new features!!! You can create a profile, make a wish list, and purchase products, read reviews, pin products as well as other things. I like the new site but I also miss the old one. It is worth taking a ride or two around the block, so go check it out and let me know what you think!!!

Avon is taking a local stand for marketing and I love it!!! Instead of a one face fits all for beauty, they are looking to take local celebrities and keep the same product and advertising with a local message. This will position the brand to become more relevant to the culture in a particular market…i.e., US or Brazil. This totally makes sense to me and I am excited to see the end result!!! Good luck Avon!!!

Japonesque, who is the guru of beauty tools and best known for their tweezers, is expanding the brand with color cosmetics. WOW…this is super exciting. The date was set for October 27th in Ulta with 220 stores and to expand with another 150 doors in March. Side note: I think I am going to take a break and head over to my local Ulta for some beauty play time today…giggles!!! The products are priced from $18 -$36 with very vivid colors for the eyes, lips and face. FYI…if you live in the UK, the brand is also launching in John Lewis.

UK brand Rimmel is changing its focus to eyes. Mascara seems to be driving the overall sales for the brand so why not make it the focus. They are now ranked as the 4th largest mascara brand in the mass market!!! They have also updated the shadows; they have a cream formulation that is long lasting and easy to work with. Sounds like the eyes have it…LOL and I am going to see what they hype is all about with reviews to come…of course!!! 🙂

L’Oreal names Blake Lively as the new Brand Ambassador. This is exciting to me, as I really like Blake; I have loved her style since the 1st season of Gossip Girl (don’t judge me…she has style and the show was good) LOL.

The brand Toppik, best known for their hair fiber products, launches hair supplements for growth. They will be adding Hair Nutrition 2-in-1 Capsules and other products later this year that will also promote hair growth. Products are now available at Sally’s Beauty Supply, a 30-day supply for $19.95 and Ulta early next year. While I am not down with taking supplements, I am interested in the Toppik Hair Regrowth Treatment – a topical treatment to be launched next year!!!

Jay Z is set to launch his 1st fragrance for men. Well, it was only a matter of time as his wife Bey has experienced much success with her scents. November 20th is the launch date at Barney’s to be followed up with a November 29th date in Macy’s, Sephora, Nordstrom, Belk, Bon-Ton and Ulta. Just in time for the holiday season!!!

MAC names Rihanna as the new Viva Glam Spokesperson for 2014!!! Well…it only makes sense as RiRi Woo was a best seller and sold out in most stores as well as on-line during its initial launch. But, I have to wonder, is it better to have the RiRi brand as an exclusive limited edition or as the Spokesperson for the brand??? Hmm…I guess only time will tell. Don’t get me wrong, I love her style and trend setting ways but will people get bored seeing her as the face of the brand for the whole year??? What are your thoughts???

So there you have it Beauty Scholars…this weeks beauty news!!! What do you think??? Does any of this newness excite you???

Secret and Not So Secret Beauty Tips

Hey Beauty Scholars!!! It’s Friday night and it is about to storm in the Chicago area so, I thought I would giveaway some of my best secret and not so secret beauty tips for your weekend enjoyment 🙂 Some tips I have heard from friends, some from beauty mags or beauty segments; none the less…they are great tips and I hope they help you as much as they have helped me…enjoy!!!

I was watching Dr. Oz one day and he had a beauty secret that I could not pass on and I have only shared this publicly once so you are in for a treat!!! If your feet get sweaty or stinky, use deodorant on the bottom to keep them dry!!! Yep, that’s right, deodorant is not just for keeping your underarms dry and smelling fresh, it is also for feet too!!! LBVS…don’t judge me but it works.

Even though I have beautiful brown skin…I sometimes want that sun kissed look!!! So, instead of laying out in the sun, I use a liquid bronzer on my body to give my skin that beautiful bronzed glow!!! Mmm, hmm it is one of my best-kept secrets for fake hosiery on my legs…LOL

Did you know that if your skin is oily that you could blot it with a toilet seat cover??? I know, I know…it sounds crazy but the paper is made out of the same material as blotting papers. Who knew??? If you are a little leery using those, try a paper napkin, it is not the same but it helps the shine and keeps you from looking like an oil slick…LOL. But remember to blot not rub or the paper will be all over your face and then you will look a little crazy…IJS.

You want whiter teeth quick fast and in a hurry??? No problem, apply your best red lipstick and wallah…just like magic; you have the appearance of whiter and brighter teeth!!! Easy, breezy, amazing, I know!!! Giggles

Do you have shampoo/conditioner or shower gel that you purchased and did not return??? Use them as shaving cream or use the shower gel or shampoo as hand soap. No need of wasting it or throwing it out. It does the same thing, the same thing, the same thing…LOL.

Speaking of shaving your legs, to get a closer shave, use a body scrub before you shave to remove the dead skin cells. This will give you super soft skin and if you use self tanner, it will prevent you from having that streaky look. You know that uneven look you hate; well, it’s all gone if you scrub before you tan!!! I know, thank me later 🙂

Last but not least, stop using a towel to dry your hair. Why??? Well, the little loops in the towel catch onto the hair and pulls it. Towels absorb a lot of moisture and you need a little moisture if you are going to blow dry the hair. Plus, when you rub the towel in your hair it causes the hair to get frizzy and tangled…boo!!! So what should you use, you ask??? A cotton t-shirt will save the day and your hair!!!  And who doesn’t want great hair???

So there you have it…my secret and not so secret Friday night beauty tips!!! MUAH

5 Beauty Travel Tips to Keep You TSA Approved

*This post was originally posted on Ms. Travel Chic*

Do you ever have trouble packing the right beauty products for your vacation??? Do you get confused on what to take and what to leave??? Do you have to check your bag EVERY single trip because you just have too many products??? If you answered yes to any of these questions…then you need to continue, read on and join the club…LOL. These are Beauty Blogger problems that I face on constant basis and I am tired of the TSA making me check my bags all the darn time L. I have decided to take matters into my own hands and share my top 5 beauty tips to help us all overcome this problem J.
Tip #1: This tip is easy but it took me forever to see what was right in front of my face (don’t judge me, I have seen the light and opened my eyes). If you are taking a trip, when you shop for your beauty products, always shop the travel section. Every store has one these days from Target to Sephora and everything in between. The travel section offers sizes that are TSA approved. My go to travel section for skin and hair products is the Beauty To Go area in Sephora. They offer the brands that I love and the products that I use.
Tip #2: Forget the Ziploc bags and get a plastic see through bag from a drug store to fill all of your travel sized products. A see through makeup bag holds more than a Ziploc bag and they last longer…trust me I know!!! As a Beauty Blogger, I can never get all my travel size products in a Ziploc bag as I am always adding more…LOL. I found a great bag from Walgreens that had plastic travel size bottles inside. I chucked those because they would leak in my bag and replaced them with old bottles as I finish the product inside…genius, I know!!! LOL
Tip #3: Utilize the space inside your bag for non-liquid items like deodorant, pressed powder, toothbrush and liquids like contact lens solution (yes, this is okay…the TSA will not tell you but I will). You can have contact lens solution in a travel size inside of your suitcase and get through security. Trust me…a TSA Agent informed me on this tip J…Winning!!!
Tip #4: Purchase multifunctional beauty products that will allow more room in your suitcase like a makeup palette with eye shadow and blush or eye shadow, blush and lips. Trust me, you are not going to use 10 colors on vacation (if you do, then you are a bigger makeup junkie than me and I am not sure that I can help you)…IJS. You can also purchase makeup wipes that cleanse, tone and moisturize so you do not have bring a cleanser, toner and moisturizer.
Tip #5: If you don’t have sensitive skin or if you are not picky, leave your shower gels and shampoos behind. You can utilize what the hotel offers or you can do what I do…shop when you get to your destination. These days a lot of hotels offer decent brands for shower gels and shampoo for free (and if it is a good brand and it’s free…then it is totally for me)!!!
So there you have it, the top 5-beauty travel tips from a Beauty Blogger!!! I hope this has helped you as much as it as helped me J. I travel just about every week and it is not always that easy. BTW…I always have 2 of everything in case I have to check my bag and the airline misplaces (I mean looses) my bag!!! I keep 1 set at home and 1 in my suitcase and this is what works for me. Happy Packing!!! MUAH

Beautiful, Bronzed and Glowing

*This post was originally posted on Rachel O. Beauty

A few weeks ago I attended The Makeup Show in Chicago and I had the best time ever!!! I was in a makeup paradise and I did not want to leave but I had to for 2 reasons…it was the last day and they were shutting the show down and I had spent so much money that I was about to go broke…LOL.  During my spending spree, I purchased several things but today, I am going to tell you about Body Glow by Nars.
Francois is the founder of the brand who had always been obsessed with colors, textures and purity, with the limited availability of the choices offered within the cosmetics industry, he launched a brand of lipsticks in Barney’s New York and the brand has expanded from there with color, skincare and a few makeup brushes.
I decided to purchase the Body Glow because I like to wear a lot of dresses and shorts in the summer to show off my beautiful brown legs 🙂 However, I don’t like the dull color of my legs when they have been hiding all winter and spring under a pant or tights 🙁 they just look a little pale and they need a little help. LOL So I have been in search of the perfect bronzer, as I want that beautiful bronzed sun-kissed look that offers the appearance of hosiery. Yep, that’s right…the right bronzer will give the appearance of hosiery…who knew??? LOL
So I have been testing the Body Glow and here is what I like: it’s not just a bronzer, it’s also a moisturizer that offers a hint of shimmer and glow to my skin. It feels like silk and it has Monoi Oil that makes it smell amazing!!!! The smell is not overpowering; it reminds me of a beach vacation…(ssh, I can hear the waves crashing on the beach with the sun warming the sand and I can picture myself enjoying the summer breeze with a tropical drink in my hand). Oh, sorry…I got carried away on my imaginary vacation but I could not help it, because that is where the smell takes me LOL. Back to the subject at hand…a little goes a long way, it’s not sticky, it dries quickly like a lotion and it will not rub off on your clothes. The best thing about Body Glow; it washes off so it is perfect as an alternative to lotions, potions and creams…LOL. And according to, you can use it to soothe, rehydrate and prevent peeling after a day of fun in the sun.
Now I know you are thinking that I don’t have any dislikes but sorry, pump your brakes…I do :-). I would prefer a little more color not much…just a little. I would also prefer different packaging because it’s in a glass bottle and it can break. It doesn’t have an SPF to protect you from sun or sunburn (whomp, whomp). Last but not least, I would like to have a slimmer nozzle to prevent me from pouring out too much product and wasting it as the price is a little steep (this is truly a luxury product) and in my Sweet Brown voice…ain’t nobody got time fa dat!!! LOL
Overall, I really like the Body Glow by Nars but because of the cost ($59), it would only be for those special date nights, girl’s night out or great beauty events…IJS. My final grade for Body Glow by Nars is 4 out of 5 smooches…MUAH!!! If you are interested in purchasing the Body Glow go to or Sephora. Happy Bronzing!!!

A Beauty Book Review – Jump Start Your Esthetics Career

Disclaimer: I have been compensated to review Jump Start Your Esthetics Career – A Guide For Newly Licensed Estheticians. The compensation that I have received has in not influenced the review or final grade in any way.
As you know I am the Siskel & Ebert of all things beauty!!! That means I review and rate anything that is related to beauty. So when I was approached by Grace Riley Esthetics to review her book: Jump Start Your Esthetics Career – A Guide For Newly Licensed Estheticians, it was a no brainer for me.
Grace Riley not only teaches esthetics but she also wrote a book to successfully navigate new graduates step by step through the start of their career. The book allows the new graduate to outline a clear career path as well as any licensed esthetician who is looking to change directions from owning their own business, working for a company or renting a booth to interviewing, advertising, work place issues and setting yourself apart.
Here is what I liked: Grace Riley emphasizes the importance of achieving client loyalty and the best way to make it happen. She addresses many questions that a new graduate may not know to ask or are afraid to ask starting from the beginning of the interview process to addressing why you should have liability insurance. This is an easy to understand, user-friendly guide with lots of great information. The best thing about the book is that some of the information can be translated to new professionals starting out or over in several different industries, not just esthetics. Believe it or not, I even learned a few things that I can apply to my blogging career in the advertising chapter.
So now that you know what I liked, let’s talk about what I did not like: There are a few times where I felt like she could have expanded on a chapter or two, for example: chapter 2 finding a job, I would have liked to have read more on what to do after the interview and follow-up but that could be the recruiter in me from my past life…LOL.
Overall, Jump Start Your Esthetics Career – A Guide For Newly Licensed Estheticians by Grace Riley is a great, easy to understand straightforward guide. My final grade for the book is 4.5 out of 5 smooches…MUAH!!! If you are interested in starting a career in the beauty industry or if you are a recent beauty grad, this is a must read!!! You can purchase the digital book on for $6.99. Happy Reading!!!

Skin for Life: The Importance of a Good Skin Care Regimen

Guest Post By: Grace Riley
When you ask most people what their skin care regimen is they tend to list all of the things that make most estheticians squirm. Many use drying bar soaps; some use over-the-counter creams; some don’t wash their skin on a regular basis; others use hot water directly on their face; many don’t use sun block; and a brave few admit that they don’t get bi-annual skin cancer screenings. All of these combined factors will lead to dull, lifeless, and haggard-looking skin, not to mention the risk of skin cancer.

We live in a world that demands quick fixes, and this is true in the skin care industry as well, people will spend years destroying their skin and then demand a doctor or esthetician fix it in five minutes. While we’ve come very far in terms of cosmetic skin care, it is far better to take a preventative skin care approach instead of the destroying and fixing it later method. Sure, there are many medical procedures that can fix skin issues, but why not save the money and the pain that goes along with medical procedures by using good preventative care? Here are my rules for great, healthy skin for life:

(1) Cleanse 2x’s daily with high quality, professional cleanser (my favorites: Bioelements, Eminence, & Image Skin)

(2) Exfoliate twice weekly (love Dermalogica’s Rice Exfoliant & Eminence Pumpkin Enzyme Peel)

(3) Steam a couple times a week and remove blackheads

(4) Use high quality masks for various conditions (clay for oil/acne—aloe or pineapple for sensitive—creamy/milk based for dry)

(5) Get regular facials-at least once a month.

(6) Use some type of Vitamin C on the skin—it helps with numerous conditions, but it also gives the skin a nice glow & taking Fish oil supplements is another good one for glow.

(7) Aging Skin-Use Prescription Retin-A—nothing beats it—it is the ultimate exfoliation and it combats both acne and fine lines. Over-the-counter Retinols are good, but not nearly as effective as the script Retin-A.

(8) Bleaching Cream (I’ve found Obagi to be the most effective)-to combat dark pigmentation patches or freckles, and to smooth out the skin.

(9) SUNBLOCK IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST & Get bi-annual or annual skin cancer screenings.

(10) Preventative Botox-I know this sounds absurd, but if there is minimal damage or fine lines, it is actually better to get Botox at that point to help freeze the muscles so they don’t develop into deeper lines later. Of course, Botox is a personal choice and I am not advocating it, but instead bringing the information to readers that I was given by a dermatologist.

Hair Care Tip…

Silicone coats the hair and does not penetrate the hair shaft; it can cause buildup and does not prevent breakage it disguises it.

Silicone has similar properties to rubber and plastic…Do you know what happens to rubber and plastic when you heat them??? They burn!!! So when you continuously use products with silicone and apply heat, you can burn and damage the hair.

So, when you go to purchase your next hair product…check the label and make sure it is made without silicones!!!
