My Aveda Experience

I was recently invited to spend some time at the new Aveda store in Orland Park, IL with my blogger boo Terez – author of 11 Beautiful Tools and Founder of the Business of Beauty Collective. We had an afternoon of pampering, surprises and learning more about what Aveda has to offer.

So I must admit its has been a while since I have been inside of an Aveda store. Nothing against the brand, it’s just been a long time. Anywho… I was excited about tagging along because I wanted to see what I have been missing!

Apparently I have been missing a lot because they have incorporated some cool things such as Chakra readings. Your Chakra is where your energy comes together from the head to the toe; it gives you balance! Yes, you can now go to Aveda and receive a complimentary Chakra reading. They will show you which of your Chakra’s are out of balance, how to bring them back to life, back to reality as well as how to de-stress.

Your body will tell you what you are missing and what you need based on the colors you see and words that speak to you. I picked harmony, wisdom and insight. You will then smell the scents that go with the cards you picked and the one that appeals the most to you is the one that your body has been craving. My body has been craving number 7, which was wisdom and Terez was number 6, which was insight.

After you pick the chakra that you are missing, you receive a massage in the area where you feel the most stress. My stress areas are my neck and shoulders and the Stress Fix line was very relaxing and de-stressing. Yes…I am so here for what I have been missing!

Next, I received a hair consultation based on my hair type and concerns. It was determined that I needed products to nourish my dry hair. The hair specialist suggested that I use Brilliant shampoo and conditioner with dry remedy hair mask and shine. I tried the shine in the store and it gave my hair life! I’m so in love!!!

I also received a skin consultation and based on my skin type and concerns, it was suggested that I use Botanical Kinetics – cleanser, toner and moisturizer along with Tourmaline Charged Radiant Skin Refiner for my anti-aging concerns along with Green Science eye cream.

Aveda also offers makeovers too but since I came I with makeup and I was hungry, I decided to pass on that but Terez opted in and received a makeover while I received my skin consultation.

It was certainly a day filled with beauty, relaxation and fun girl time something that we both needed and enjoyed! If I had to rate my Aveda experience, I would give it 5 out of 5 smooches…MUAH! The Orland Park team really went above and beyond. I was surprised and in awe of all of this newness!

But don’t fret, because you can head over and receive one or all of the consultations free of charge. However, I must warn you…you will not leave empty handed because you will want to purchase some or all of the products that are suggested for you because they are just that good! Good luck because you will need that in order to refrain from overindulgence with purchasing products! Happy shopping…MUAH

Healthy Hair Tips From Dr. Oz

Healthy Hair Tips From the Dr.Oz Show copy

So I am watching Dr. Oz and he is talking hair. He has hair expert – Celebrity Stylist Kyle White on the show who has 25 years of experience and here is what he says…

  1. When you chemically treat your hair and use heat, you are burning your hair. When you use a high heat to style your hair with a blow dryer or flat iron, Kyle says you should use Castor Oil because it’s a great heat protectant. It protects the hair from heat damage.
  1. Frequent washing of your hair is too drying and strips those natural oils, which in turn dry out your hair. Kyle says “Your scalps natural oils are Mother Nature’s natural conditioners.” Don’t wash your hair more than once a week; do scalp massages to circulate the blood flow.
  1. Harsh weather like the sun can damage the hair. One day of being out in the sun is the equivalent of 5 days of bleach. It’s essential to apply sunscreen for the hair. You can find sunscreen for the hair in drug stores.

These are easy inexpensive tips that can protect your hair and keep it healthy, which will in turn promote growth! I don’t know about you but I headed to the store to pick up these products ASAP!

Hair 180 or Hair 360?

A few months ago I received a box of products as a gift from a company named Hair 180. Nikki Rushing created Hair 180 because she was a frustrated consumer from brands discontinuing her favorite products or going out of business. Through self-education on product ingredients, she learned which components she liked and what worked for her hair. With the encouragement of her husband, she started researching more and more, became a hair activist and created her brand of products.

Hair 180 uses high quality ingredients infused with pure certified organics. The products are free from parabens, sulfates, silicones, drying alcohols and petroleum as well as mineral oils. In other words, all of the stuff that is bad for your hair.

I have been using the Whipped Shea Butter, Revitalizing Shampoo, Hydrating Deep Conditioner, Leave-in Conditioner/Detangler and the Nourishing Hair Serum for a few months. Two out of the five products stood out to me, the Whipped Shea Butter and Leave-in Conditioner/Detangler. Today I am going to rate the Whipped Shea Butter.

Here’s the Glam: This product gives a lightweight shine and moisture without weighing the hair down. I use it before blow-drying and flatironing my hair and it offers the moisture I need and protects it from heat damage. It helps with my dry scalp and hair during the Chicago harsh winter months. The smell is great and not overpowering. Best of all, it is filled with great ingredients. It has Unrefined Shea Butter, Organic Coconut Oil, Vitamin E, Olive and Grape Seed Oil with Organic Jojoba Oil. Oh, and I forgot to mention, a little goes a very long way. Just a dime size will do just fine.

IMG_2379IMG_2380Here’s the Slam: Insert happy face here 🙂 because I don’t have anything bad to say about this product!

My final grade for the Hair 180 Whipped Shea Butter (in case you have not guessed it) is 5 out of 5 smooches!!! MUAH. I love everything about this product and I think you will too. If you are interested in purchasing the Whipped Shea Butter, you can buy the trial size (2oz) for $6.00 or the regular size (4oz) for $15.00. Go to Happy Moisturizing!

Give it to me Straight

It’s been a little over a year since I have been wearing my hair natural. I have grown out my relaxer to be chemical free and healthy…WooHoo!

During this journey, I tried a lot of products to prevent hair breakage and maintain one texture of hair. You see, when you transition your hair, you can have curly, straight and wavy pieces which, can be very frustrating because you don’t know how to wear your hair. During this process, you can also experience a lot of breakage because the relaxed hair is damaged and growing out and the curly hair is stronger hair. When the curly hair grows more and more, it can make the relaxed hair snap and break.

During my transition, I tried new products from the Ojon Super Sleek line. It is a four-step process with the Super Sleek Smoothing Shampoo, Super Sleek Smoothing Conditioner, Super Sleek Hair Straightening Treatment and the Super Sleek Restorative Blowout Protector. I was so excited because I have been using Ojon for a long time and the products have helped me maintain healthy hair throughout the years and I knew these products would not be any different!

So, I purchased the products in Spring of 2013 and I have been testing it since then. Yes, it has taken me over 6 months to test this product line and I will let you know why in just a moment.

As I mentioned earlier, when you transition your hair you will have all types of textures going on from curly, wavy and straight and it is frustrating to say the least! I was not ready to wear my hair curly so the only alternative was to wear it straight and I needed product to help me achieve my style because by the 6th month, blow-drying was taking too long and I was burning my hair by applying too much heat. I needed help!

Here’s the glam: The Super Sleek Shampoo, Conditioner and Restorative Blowout Protector helped me maintain my straight hair for the first 5 months. The shampoo is sulfate free so it prevents dryness and it is very moisturizing. The conditioner is moisturizing as well and was easy to comb through my hair. The blow-drying cream was awesome! It kept my hair straight, smooth and sleek. I loved my hair until the sixth month during the core summer months! My hair swelled and it did not stay as straight even with the blow-drying cream :-(. So, I implemented the fourth step with the Super Sleek Straightening Treatment and I was in hair heaven! My blow-drying time was cut in half and my hair felt like silk. I was so excited to read that the product last up to 30 shampoos…FTW!

I was a little nervous because the straightening treatment is like a keratin treatment but without all the bad stuff and I have tried a keratin treatment before and it did not work. By the second try, my hair was falling out. It was a disaster to say the least.  But this was different I was convinced and I loved it until it was time for the third application.

Here is the slam: Right before the third application, my hair started breaking off. I have a major breakage in the front and a section in the back 🙁 Whomp, Whomp! How do I know that it was the straightening treatment? Well, it is the only product I have been using, I have not tried anything new and my hair stylist who is also a hair instructor said products like this are not made multi-ethnic hair. Even though the product is free from formaldehyde, lye and cysteine…anything that is like a keratin treatment is not good.

Needless to say, I did not have her do a third application and my results are inconclusive for the Super Sleek line by Ojon. Here’s what’s interesting…I found out that the straightening treatment was discontinued for thick/coarse hair but I did not find out why. I am still using the shampoo, conditioner and blow-dry protector because I don’t think it is harmful and it worked for the first five months.

On my last visit to the hair salon, I got my hair trimmed to camouflage the breakage and it has been not been breaking since then. I will certainly keep you posted. I guess in this case, I took one for the team!

Report Card Review for: Number 4 Clarifying Shampoo

Report Card Review for: Number 4 Clarifying Shampoo
I received this shampoo from my monthly subscription of Birchbox. I was so excited when I noticed not just a shampoo but one that clarifies as well!!! Woo Hoo…the Birchbox team must love me!!!
This French inspired brand has 4 product selections that were inspired by simplicity and a special moment in Paris. Their goal is to deliver quality products with an extraordinary experience. The products have botanical ingredients with innovative technology. With anti aging formulas this color-protecting brand is gluten, sulfate, sodium and paraben free as well as 100% vegan.
I have been using this shampoo for 2 weeks now and here is what I liked…it lathered very well although it is free of sulfates and sodium chlorides (detergents that make shampoos lather and foam and are known to strip color and natural oils). A little goes a long way; I only had to use a dime size. It smelled really clean and fresh of white freesia, golden amber and warm musk. The shampoo also has antioxidants and vitamin C, which help protect against the earth’s environment, and promotes healthier hair.

I know this sounds like it is too good to be true and you are probably ready to run out and buy a bottle now but I have to tell you what I did not like before you go and spend your money 🙂 The biggest minus for me is that it was too moisturizing. I have used clarifying shampoos most of my adult life and I must say that I have never had any that felt like this (even sulfate free shampoos). Don’t get me wrong; I like a shampoo with moisturizing properties but not in the one that clarifies. I need to feel that squeaky-clean feeling in my hair when I am removing product build up and pollution. I felt like it really did not clarify because of the remainder of moisture it left behind.
My final grade is 3.5 out of 5 smooches. I would not go out and purchase it for myself because I can’t stand that much moisture in a clarifying shampoo but if moisture is not an issue for you, you can purchase Number 4 Clarifying Shampoo from for $32. Happy Clarifying!!!

Product review for: Island Breeze Moisturizing Whip by Being Free Comes Naturally

Product review for: Island Breeze Moisturizing Whip by Being Free Comes Naturally
This is a new, up and coming brand with handmade products that I came across during the fabulous Rachel O Holiday Beauty Bazaar December 2012. I had the pleasure of meeting the founder of the brand Rhonda Marshall. She has worked for some of the big cosmetic brands and she helped develop one of the first clear antiperspirants for the Degree Deodorant product line. Now, she has created her own line and I am here to tell you all about it!!!
After the Beauty Bazaar, I went from table to table to check out some vendors as well as make some connections. As I was on my way out the door, I stopped at the last table filled with products, introduced myself to the owner of the brand, Rhonda who was happy to gift me with a few products. I was so excited and told her that I would definitely try the products and blog about them. Now that you have all the background information, here is my review on one of the products.
The first product I tried was the Island Breeze Moisturizing Whip. This is a moisturizing whip for the hair and or scalp that can be used on wet or dry 2-3 times per week or as needed. It contains Shea and Mango butters, Coconut and Avocado oils as well as Pro Vitamin B 5 just to name a few.

Here’s what I like about it…it is very moisturizing but no too much that it leaves your hair greasy. It smells wonderful but it is not overpowering. A little goes a long way; it is very lightweight and great for dry scalp. It also gives great shine and it does not build up on the hair toward the middle or end of the week!!! What I really love the most is that all hair types can use it from relaxed to natural.

Here’s what I did not care for…because there are no directions on the label, I assumed it was a body cream when I first opened it so used it as such (don’t judge me, you have done it before too) LOL. After a few uses, I decided to go to the website and read up on the directions. It was at that time that I realized that it was just for the hair but, if you have dry skin this winter, I would not dismiss using it on the body as it worked wonders on my skin.

My overall grade for Island Breeze Moisturizing Whip is 4.5 out of 5 smooches…MUAH!!! You can purchase this great cream for the hair on for $12. This is a great product for a great price so head over now and purchase a jar!!!

Ingredients 101

Are you in ingredient overload??? Do you want to know the features and benefits of the ingredients in your skincare??? Well today is that day, welcome to Ingredients 101, the benefits of skin and hair care!!!
1. Acai is a berry that is an antioxidant (think of the antioxidants as Pac-man eating the dots). It fights against smoke smog and pollution better known as free radicals (the free radicals are the ghost chasing Pac-man). It can also help to tighten and firm the skin.
2. Coconut oil is moisturizing, nourishing, and anti-aging. Because it is so moisturizing, it is great for dry hair and scalp and it helps to nourish damaged hair. It works wonders on extremely dry skin like dermatitis, psoriasis, or eczema.  Most importantly, it can be used as massage oil.
3. Argan oil is pressed from the nut of a fruit tree. It helps with healing scars, anti-aging, soothes skin and anti-inflammatory. It hydrates the hair, adds moisture, shine and tames frizz. FYI…Moroccan oil is just a brand of products that is made with Argan oil.
4. Peptides are amino acids also known as protein molecules, which boost the natural production of collagen and elastin. They help plump the skin and give it elastin as the skin starts to age, wrinkle or sag. They are anti-aging which helps to boost the collagen and elastin. Think of an old sweater and how loose and stretchy it is. When peptides are applied, it becomes tightly woven just like new.
5. Retinol is derived from Vitamin A, which improves the skins texture. It evens out the skin tone and can make the skin appear younger. FYI…products with retinol can cause sensitivity to the sun so make sure you wear an SPF.
6. Rosemary is healing and great for oily skin with acne to help clear it up. It is also great for sensitive skin as an anti-inflammatory and it helps to darken gray hair. Believe it or not, it stimulates the roots to promote hair growth and it helps combat dry scalp.
7. Green Tea Extract increases your SPF when worn under a sunscreen. It is also great for anti-aging
8. Kojic acid is derived from a fungus and it helps to lighten dark spots such as freckles, dark spots from acne, age spots and hyperpigmentation from over exposure of the sun.
This concludes our class of Ingredients 101, The Benefits of Skin and Hair Care. Thank you for joining!!! If I missed and ingredient that you are curious about, comment below and I will answer…MUAH
