Tips & Tricks to Finding the Perfect Red Lip

Beauty School Scarlet

For those of you who know me, you know that red is my signature lip color. I have been wearing various shades of red since my mother allowed me to wear lipstick. So when I started my blog in 2012, it was a no-brainer for me, my logo had to have red lips.

Over the years of wearing this power color, I have come across so many women who are afraid to wear it or just don’t know how.

If I had a dollar for every woman that said, “I can’t wear a red lipstick because it’s too bright for me. Or I can’t find the right color…” I would totally be a millionaire by now. No, really I would because it’s been that many.

To all the ladies who cringe at the color red or dread shopping for a red lippie, I am here to set you free! By the time you finish reading this post, you will officially call me your, “Red Lippie Sheroe or The Fairy Godmother of Red Lips.” Whatever you choose it’s all right with me just as long as you’re no longer afraid to sport the infamous red lip!

Here are my rules to finding your perfect match…

  1. Yes You Can: If you can wear a red polish (or for that matter anything red), you can wear red lipstick. The next time you go shopping for a red lippie, take your favorite red polish, compare the colors and find a match. You’ll be surprised with your findings.
  1. Know Your Reds: There are several colors of reds with different undertones. Find a red that will compliment your skin tone. Fair skin with pink undertones look for a red/pink. Dark skin with red undertone, look for a red/blue. Medium skin with yellow undertone, look for a red/orange.
  1. Start Off Slow: If you’ve always wanted to try a red but you’re a little nervous because you think it’s too much, take baby steps. Check out the shear lipsticks and slowly graduate to more pigment. Burt’s Bees makes a great shear red.

  1. Mix And Match: Sometimes it takes mixing 2-3 shades of red to find the perfect match. It may take a few tries before you find what you really like.
  1. Layer, Layer and Layer: Build the colors by layering. Start with a red lip marker or liner, add a lipstick and if you want a little shine, add some gloss too. The reds don’t have to be exact but it’s best if they are from the same color family.
  1. Try It Before You Buy It: Before you purchase clothes you try them on, right? Well, the same thing goes for lipstick. Try it on your lips not your hands because you’re going to wear it on your lips anyway. Besides, your hands and lips are two different shades and you won’t get the same results. Unless you’re a makeup artist or a pro with colors, you’ll be left with disappointment and all mad at me (and I’m just not here for that). So, I beg of you to try it on your lips!

Side Note: Make sure the Beauty Advisor sanitizes the tester before you try it on.

Advice: When you find your favorite red buy more than one. You can never have enough and brands are constantly adding and deleting shades. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Trust me I know!  Smashbox discontinued my favorite lip marker and my life has never been the same.

So there you have it, tips and tricks to finding the best red lips. What are you waiting for? Get your squad together, schedule a beauty play date, follow the steps above and pucker up baby! MUAH

Stila Lippie Love or Nah?

A few months ago I opened one of my beauty box subscriptions and I found a little red sample of Liquid Lipstick in Beso by Stila Cosmetics calling my name! And since red is my signature color, I had to answer, try it and review it…all in that order. LOL

IMG_2664

I tried Stila last year for the very first time and it has become one of my top beauty brands. In case you are new to the brand, let me make the introduction. Ladies, please meet Stila Cosmetics, a brand that believes you create your own rules when it comes to beauty. They encourage you to be your own makeup artist and celebrate your individual style. OMG, I so love that statement because they encourage you to be unique with your beauty and create your own rules. And what’s not to love about that?

IMG_2667

So now that you have been properly introduced, let me give you the Glam it or Slam it!

The Glam: The first thing I have to say is…I love the color. It’s not your usual red; it has an orange undertone. And if you did not know, an orange lippie is what’s hot for Spring! The funny thing is, I usually don’t care for a red orange lipstick, I prefer a red blue but this was just beautiful when I applied it. It’s called Liquid Lipstick and I can see why. It has a velvet finish that is creamy with a bold color. It is long lasting; you can eat and not have to reapply…WINNING! This Liquid Lipstick will not bleed all over your lips or rub off on your drinking glass. It’s infused with amazing ingredients like Vitamin E and Avocado Oil, which keeps your lips from feeling dry and crusty. This color is perfect for all skin tones but if red isn’t your color, that’s okay because there are seven more shades to choose from.

The Slam: Wait for it…wait for it…NOT ONE THING!

My final grade is 5 out of 5 smooches…MUAH! The Liquid Lipstick in Beso by Stila Cosmetics is my new lippie love for Spring 2014! If you are interested in purchasing the new lippie love of my life, head over to Sephora or stilacosmetics.com and purchase it for $22. Happy Shopping!!! MUAH

Glam it or Slam it?

A few weeks ago I opened one of my beauty box subscriptions and I found a little red sample of Stila calling my name! And of course, I had to try it because after all…red is my signature lip color ;-).

But before I give you my review and final grade, I want you to tell me if this color is a Glam it or a Slam it? What are your thoughts??? Do I Glam it up and rock the red or Slam it down and never wear it again? My inquiring mind wants to know!

A Lipstick with Color and Pigment

This post was originally posted on Rachel O Beauty

I am always in search of a new red lipstick to try and Sephora is usually at the top of my list. A few months ago I decided to try the brand Makeup Forever because they are known for deep pigments of color and long lasting products; two of the qualities I love in my makeup!

IMG_1975

Who is Makeup Forever? It’s a brand created by Dany Sanz a former student of fine arts who became a makeup artist. Later in life she became an instructor in a beauty school by day and created the products at night. Makeup Forever became popular with makeup artist and expanded through the years.

Here’s the 411…I have been testing the Rouge Artist Intense Color Lipstick in Moulin Rouge for several months. The first time I tried it, I liked it. The second time, not so much because the color started bleeding around my mouth and I looked like a clown… LBVS. I had the biggest red ring around my mouth after 10 minutes of applying the lipstick. I had to try it a few more times to see if it was the product or the way I used the product. Maybe my skin was too oily or maybe I used too much moisturizer around my lips, I didn’t know so I had to try it again.

IMG_1971

Here’s the Glam: The lipstick is highly pigmented and the color is true to the shade shown. It is moisturizing and you can get a lot of color on the lips with just one swipe.

IMG_1974

Here’s the Slam: It does not last that long. After lunch, I had to reapply because most of the product ended up on the glass and not my lips. In fact, most of the lipstick was gone by the end of my meal 🙁 . After several uses, the color did bleed around my mouth but not as much. There is a slight perfume smell to the lipstick, it’s not enough to drive you crazy but it does linger.

My overall grade for the Rouge Artist Intense Color Lipstick in Moulin Rouge is 2.5 out of 5 smooches…MUAH! While the lipstick is highly pigmented, it does not last very long. My biggest pet peeve in a lipstick is seeing more lipstick on the glass or my teeth than on the lips. Last but not least, I hate when I lipstick bleeds. If you are interested in purchasing this lippie, you can get at Sephora or makeupforver.com for $20. Happy Shopping!

Did Nuance Salma Hayek Lip Trio Make the Grade???

Report Card Review for Lights, Camera, Action Lip Trio in Pink Berry from Nuance Salma Hayek
Every other celebrity has a line of products launching these days and as a self-proclaimed beauty junkie, I am here to review, rate and give you the 411 on if it’s even worth your time, effort or money. Well Beauty Scholars, today I am going to share my thoughts on Nuance Salma Hayek, so sit back, get a cup of tea and enjoy 🙂
In case you didn’t know, Salma Hayek created the Nuance brand with CVS Pharmacy. She developed the line with her grandmother in mind who was a cosmetologist using some of her beauty secrets as well as her exposure in beauty as a world traveler. The end result was to develop a line to “help every woman enhance the nuances that define her individual beauty.”
I received a full size sample of the Lip Trio in my swag bag from Shecky’s Girls Night Out a few weeks ago. When I first saw the product, I thought it was just a gloss until I finally took a good look and realized it was a 3 in 1 product (from the name…duh)!!! After my discovery of this great revelation, I was so excited that I tried it immediately because I so love multifunctional products (they make you feel like you are getting more for your money…hahaha)!!! And every girl loves a savings, beauty or not…right??? Right!!!
Anywho, here are the pros: I love the 3 in 1 concept. You can actually get more than 3 looks. I tested it on my arm and came up with 7 but I am sure there are more combinations that I may have missed. The pencil goes on very easy and smooth. The lipstick is matte but not drying and the gloss is not sticky (thank goodness because I hate a sticky gloss). I love the packaging and the size of each lip product.
I know, I know, this lip trio sounds like every beauty diva’s dream come true BUT…there are some cons 🙁 Sorry… I am just giving it to you straight (like they say, honesty is the best policy Jwith that said, here are the cons: I am not one for smells on my lips…a balm, gloss, or lipstick. It drives me bananas!!! The smell isn’t that bad, I just don’t want to sniff it all day!!! I filled in my lips with the lip pencil completely, added the lipstick on top as well as the gloss over that and the products did not last as long as I would have liked. I reapplied the products after lunch, I did not eat, I only drank water and by the time I got to my hotel, the color faded…boo!!! There was still some left but not as much as I thought there should be with the amount of layers I applied. I also would have liked the gloss to be a little shinier…the shinier the better for me…IJS, I am such a girly girl…LOL. I think the gloss should be a little bigger because that is what most women will reapply with and this size will not last that long.
My final grade for Lights, Camera, Action Lip Trio is 3.5 out of 5. I would be willing to try it again in a different color as some colors have more pigment and last longer than others. If you are interested in trying the Lip Trio by Nuance Salma Hayek, stop in your local CVS or shop cvs.com. Happy Shopping!!!
