Tips & Tricks to Finding the Perfect Red Lip

Beauty School Scarlet

For those of you who know me, you know that red is my signature lip color. I have been wearing various shades of red since my mother allowed me to wear lipstick. So when I started my blog in 2012, it was a no-brainer for me, my logo had to have red lips.

Over the years of wearing this power color, I have come across so many women who are afraid to wear it or just don’t know how.

If I had a dollar for every woman that said, “I can’t wear a red lipstick because it’s too bright for me. Or I can’t find the right color…” I would totally be a millionaire by now. No, really I would because it’s been that many.

To all the ladies who cringe at the color red or dread shopping for a red lippie, I am here to set you free! By the time you finish reading this post, you will officially call me your, “Red Lippie Sheroe or The Fairy Godmother of Red Lips.” Whatever you choose it’s all right with me just as long as you’re no longer afraid to sport the infamous red lip!

Here are my rules to finding your perfect match…

  1. Yes You Can: If you can wear a red polish (or for that matter anything red), you can wear red lipstick. The next time you go shopping for a red lippie, take your favorite red polish, compare the colors and find a match. You’ll be surprised with your findings.
  1. Know Your Reds: There are several colors of reds with different undertones. Find a red that will compliment your skin tone. Fair skin with pink undertones look for a red/pink. Dark skin with red undertone, look for a red/blue. Medium skin with yellow undertone, look for a red/orange.
  1. Start Off Slow: If you’ve always wanted to try a red but you’re a little nervous because you think it’s too much, take baby steps. Check out the shear lipsticks and slowly graduate to more pigment. Burt’s Bees makes a great shear red.

  1. Mix And Match: Sometimes it takes mixing 2-3 shades of red to find the perfect match. It may take a few tries before you find what you really like.
  1. Layer, Layer and Layer: Build the colors by layering. Start with a red lip marker or liner, add a lipstick and if you want a little shine, add some gloss too. The reds don’t have to be exact but it’s best if they are from the same color family.
  1. Try It Before You Buy It: Before you purchase clothes you try them on, right? Well, the same thing goes for lipstick. Try it on your lips not your hands because you’re going to wear it on your lips anyway. Besides, your hands and lips are two different shades and you won’t get the same results. Unless you’re a makeup artist or a pro with colors, you’ll be left with disappointment and all mad at me (and I’m just not here for that). So, I beg of you to try it on your lips!

Side Note: Make sure the Beauty Advisor sanitizes the tester before you try it on.

Advice: When you find your favorite red buy more than one. You can never have enough and brands are constantly adding and deleting shades. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Trust me I know!  Smashbox discontinued my favorite lip marker and my life has never been the same.

So there you have it, tips and tricks to finding the best red lips. What are you waiting for? Get your squad together, schedule a beauty play date, follow the steps above and pucker up baby! MUAH

Glam it or Slam it?

A few weeks ago I opened one of my beauty box subscriptions and I found a little red sample of Stila calling my name! And of course, I had to try it because after all…red is my signature lip color ;-).

But before I give you my review and final grade, I want you to tell me if this color is a Glam it or a Slam it? What are your thoughts??? Do I Glam it up and rock the red or Slam it down and never wear it again? My inquiring mind wants to know!

Pucker Up… It’s the Big Red Lip Reveal

Yesterday I posted a picture of me with a new lip color and I asked you to take a guess on the brand I was wearing. While no one guessed the brand 1 person did come close. Tiffany guessed that the product is a lip stain but it is not Sephora brand. Yes, I purchased it from Sephora and if I had not tried the product, I would have never looked at this brand for color, as they are famous for their Argan oil. Has anyone guessed it yet??? The brand is Josie Maran!!! Yes, I know…close your mouth. It was a surprise to me as well…LOL
So just in case you are scratching your head and asking me, “Who is Josie Maran????” Let me enlighten you and open your eyes to the beauty brand of (in their words) “Luxury with a Conscience.” The mastermind behind it all is Josie Maran a former actress and a supermodel that has been in the industry for over a decade. She has worked as a spokeswoman for some of the most popular beauty brands and now she has her own line of cosmetic products. Josie believes in natural beauty and created her brand to be an eco-friendly, luxurious and toxin free. What’s not to love…right???
My new lip color of choice is the Magic Marker Lip and Cheek Stain. I was in Sephora a few weeks ago searching for the perfect red and boy did I get a little overwhelmed with all the product choices because darn near every brand has 3-5 shades of red to choose from (smile, because you know that I am so right)…LOL. Because of my 500+ choices, my hunt for my new red became a 2-day process!!! But I did prevail with something that I was excited about and ready to try. Now, I was not sure if I would love this as much as my last lip stain by Smashbox but I was willing to give it a try (see my report card review on the Smashbox Lip Stain by clicking the link below).
Here is what I like about the Magic Marker Lip and Cheek Stain in Flamenco: The color is beautiful yet not overpowering like some reds. The color does stain but it is not drying on the lips and it is easy to remove. I didn’t have to reapply; it stayed on even after I ate my lunch (Woo-hoo)!!! The best thing is that it stays in place and does not bleed!!! OMG…YES, I LOVE IT!!! And just when you thought it could not get any better…it is multi-functional…yes ladies, you can wear it alone, as a base for a lipstick or gloss and as a cheek stain. And, it has hyaluronic acid as well as sugar extracts to smooth and plump the lips!!! To sum this product up in one word…Amaze-balls J
Since there are no dislikes about this product, I will just move forward to the final grade of 5 out of 5 smooches…MUAH!!! Josie Maran, you stolen my heart with the Magic Marker Lip and Cheek Stain and I want to personally thank you for making me fall in love JIf you are interested in purchasing this product, it is available at Sephora or for $19 and it is available in 8 colors. Happy Shopping!!!
