Spring Must-Have Beauty Picks For 2015

Out with the cold and in with the new; three cheers for Spring beauty and my recent trip to Sephora. As the flowers bloom so does the new season of beauty. And I am happy to report that I have a list of must haves for Spring 2015.

Contouring is the new wave in the beauty industry. You can give yourself a thinner nose or a perfect pout. You can make the illusion happen from the Contouring Magic section in Sephora. And if you’re not that savvy with enhancing your look, don’t worry; ask for a contour consultation with a Sephora beauty maven. Go head, get your contour on!

Hourglass just made my heart skip a beat with these new Modernist Eyeshadow Palettes. Five harmonizing shades that give intensity, dimension and buildable color. This will go perfect with my Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Icon. This is luxury beauty at its best!

Oh my Nars! These Dual Intensity Blush sets just gave me life. You can wear them dry for a subtle look or wet for a more intense look of a stain. I can’t wait to pair it with my Albatross Blush that I use a highlighter for the best shine, shimmer and glimmer power.

I will always be photo-shoot ready for a selfie with the new Photo Angle Pure Pigment Gel Liner by Smashbox. Beautiful bold colors and no brush required, this gel liner will last me through the day and night with no smearing or flaking. I can’t wait to add this to my collection with my Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream SPF 35.

I so love my Roller Lash by Benefit Cosmetics. It’s giving me lash power times ten. It curls, lengthens and adds depth to my lashes. It gives me an extra boost when I pair it with my Benefit They’re Real Mascara. No more little lashes for me; luxurious luscious lashes from now on. Ooh, la, lash, I love!

I can’t wait to get my hands on the new Skin Equalizer Primer by Make Up For Ever. This innovative technology is truly the, “next generation of primers”. This primer will equalize any skin tone or concern by balancing toning and smoothing the skin’s texture. This will make a great addition to my current collection of products. It’s truly a crime not to prime!

Once I tried the Genius Ultimate Anti-Aging Melting Cleanser by Algenist in the store, I was sold! This soap-free cleanser starts off as oil and lathers into a lightweight milky foam. It washes away all the dirt, debris and makeup from the day. Dear Algenist, I’m smitten with this beauty!

Wow is all that I can say about these daily cleansers from GlamGlow. These unisex cleansers are for all ages and skin types. They start off as a mud and then just like that…voila’ they turn into a foam. Yep, sign me up so I can add this to my daytime skin regimen.

Last but certainly not least. Murad has the answer to all my anti-aging beauty prayers in a one step solution with Invisiblur Perfecting Shield. This anti-aging bottle of perfection doesn’t just fight the signs of aging it also has an SPF. But wait, there’s more…it feels like silk and the results are immediate. I know because I tried it on my hand in the store and I was in awe; it was love at first pump. Murad tested and developed; Beauty School Scarlet approved!

So there you have it Beauty Scholars, my top 2015 Spring Beauty Picks from Sephora. I don’t know about you but I’m excited and ready to get my beauty retail therapy on! Ready, Set…Shop!

Be sure to share which product(s) you’re most excited about. Don’t forget to share this with your friends and schedule a beauty play date at a Sephora near you! MUAH and Happy Shopping!

A Clarisonic Beauty Review

A few months ago I finally broke down and purchased a Clarisonic Mia 2 and I am proud to say that I did not pay full price. I caught one on sale on a cool discount website for $99 and the regular price is $149. So needless to say, I wasted no time to get this deal before they sold out. I was totally winning!

In case you are wondering what’s so special about Clarisonic, let me give you the answer to your beauty question. The Clarisonic Mia 2 is a cleansing brush for the face made with two speeds and a one-minute pulsing T-Timer to clarify the skin. It’s a machine that is supposed to make exfoliation faster and easier for a more even, thorough and effective cleaning. It’s made with high quality technology to help you get the best skin ever.

There are seven different types of Clarisonic tools, which vary from speed, how you use them and what’s included inside the kit.

So now that you have the beauty 411, let’s get to the Glam it, the Slam it and the final grade!

The Glam: The Clarisonic Mia 2 is said to offer a gentle massage to exfoliate the skin. It felt a little abrasive on my skin the first time I used it and the second time, it was just a little but not as much. It is supposed to gently clean the pores without harsh abrasion. While I did not see a difference in my pores, I did see a difference with the appearance of my blackheads on my nose; they appeared to be clearer and my skin felt softer.

The tool is waterproof and can be used in the shower or bath. The T-Timer prompts you to focus on the next area on the face so you do not over exfoliate the skin.

The Slam: The kit came with a gel cleanser, which irritated and dried out my skin. Several weeks later, I tried it a second time with my regular cleanser and my skin was not as irritated but it did leave dry patches. I tried it again a third time and had the same results. I was super disappointed as I am using the gentle Clarisonic :-(.

The Clairisonic Mia 2 cleanser is meh, okay. I think that it is hyped up and it did not meet my expectations. I will use it again as I need to get my money’s worth but maybe I will try it on other areas or I will not use it as long as the T Timer suggests. My final grade for the Mia 2 is 3 out of 5 smooches!!! MUAH If you are interested in purchasing the Mia 2 Clarisonic, you can get it for $149 on, specialty cosmetic companies or department stores. Happy Exfoliating…MUAH

Why SPF Should Be Your BFF This Summer

Beauty School Scarlet SPF

SPF – Sun Protection Factor is very important not just in the summer but all year around. Here are 6 Reasons why SPF Should be Your BFF This Summer!

Just because you are wearing a SPF does not mean it will last the entire day. SPF last for about 80 minutes; you should reapply to avoid sunburn.

Melanoma is on the rise with women 40 and over as well as women of color. SPF helps to decrease the chances of getting skin cancer. Brown girls burn too and SPF will prevent your skin from burning in the sun.

Without the use of SPF dark spots caused by breakouts or hyperpigmentation on the skin will get darker in the sun.

SPF is a great way to help prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It slows down pre-mature aging that can be caused by the sun

It’s important to apply SPF on kids to prevent future damage to the skin. According to the melanoma foundation, “80% of lifetime sun damage occurs during childhood years.”

Both UVA – Aging and UVB – Burning rays can cause skin cancer. Be sure to use SPF and wear protective clothing when you are out in the sun. Hats, sunglasses and dark clothing will aide in protecting your skin.

The sun is beautiful, warm and also dangerous. To avoid the danger of the sun, make a promise to yourself and your skin this summer and include SPF, your new BFF in your daily skin routine!

My Aveda Experience

I was recently invited to spend some time at the new Aveda store in Orland Park, IL with my blogger boo Terez – author of 11 Beautiful Tools and Founder of the Business of Beauty Collective. We had an afternoon of pampering, surprises and learning more about what Aveda has to offer.

So I must admit its has been a while since I have been inside of an Aveda store. Nothing against the brand, it’s just been a long time. Anywho… I was excited about tagging along because I wanted to see what I have been missing!

Apparently I have been missing a lot because they have incorporated some cool things such as Chakra readings. Your Chakra is where your energy comes together from the head to the toe; it gives you balance! Yes, you can now go to Aveda and receive a complimentary Chakra reading. They will show you which of your Chakra’s are out of balance, how to bring them back to life, back to reality as well as how to de-stress.

Your body will tell you what you are missing and what you need based on the colors you see and words that speak to you. I picked harmony, wisdom and insight. You will then smell the scents that go with the cards you picked and the one that appeals the most to you is the one that your body has been craving. My body has been craving number 7, which was wisdom and Terez was number 6, which was insight.

After you pick the chakra that you are missing, you receive a massage in the area where you feel the most stress. My stress areas are my neck and shoulders and the Stress Fix line was very relaxing and de-stressing. Yes…I am so here for what I have been missing!

Next, I received a hair consultation based on my hair type and concerns. It was determined that I needed products to nourish my dry hair. The hair specialist suggested that I use Brilliant shampoo and conditioner with dry remedy hair mask and shine. I tried the shine in the store and it gave my hair life! I’m so in love!!!

I also received a skin consultation and based on my skin type and concerns, it was suggested that I use Botanical Kinetics – cleanser, toner and moisturizer along with Tourmaline Charged Radiant Skin Refiner for my anti-aging concerns along with Green Science eye cream.

Aveda also offers makeovers too but since I came I with makeup and I was hungry, I decided to pass on that but Terez opted in and received a makeover while I received my skin consultation.

It was certainly a day filled with beauty, relaxation and fun girl time something that we both needed and enjoyed! If I had to rate my Aveda experience, I would give it 5 out of 5 smooches…MUAH! The Orland Park team really went above and beyond. I was surprised and in awe of all of this newness!

But don’t fret, because you can head over and receive one or all of the consultations free of charge. However, I must warn you…you will not leave empty handed because you will want to purchase some or all of the products that are suggested for you because they are just that good! Good luck because you will need that in order to refrain from overindulgence with purchasing products! Happy shopping…MUAH

Skincare 101 – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Behind the Ingredients

Skincare 101

There are good ingredients and there are bad ingredients but it’s the bad ingredients that are ugly! Knowing the features and benefits of your skincare products is one thing but understanding the function of the ingredients is another. It can sometimes be overwhelming because in some cases, you have never heard of the ingredient, it is hard to pronounce like some medical terms and there’s not a quick definition to reference.

Today, I am going to share the good, the bad and the ugly behind some of the most popular ingredients.

Coconut oil is moisturizing, nourishing, and anti-aging. The Good: It is so moisturizing, it is great for dry hair/scalp and it helps to nourish damaged hair. It works wonders on extremely dry skin like dermatitis, psoriasis, or eczema.  Most importantly, it can be used as massage oil.

Glycolic Acid, one of the most popular acids is derived from sugar cane. The Good: Anti-aging, clear acne breakouts, even out the skin tone while making the skin brighter, softer and smoother.

Peptides are amino acids also known as protein molecules, which boost the natural production of collagen and elastin. The Good: They help plump the skin and give it elastin as the skin starts to age, wrinkle or sag. Think of an old sweater and how loose and stretchy it gets over time, if you were to apply peptides, the sweater would go back to its original shape as if it were new.

Silicones are derived from plastics; they coat the hair, which does not allow the product to penetrate the hair shaft. The Bad and the Ugly: It can cause buildup and does not prevent breakage; it disguises it.

Silicones have similar properties to rubber and plastic. Do you know what happens to rubber and plastic when you heat them? They burn!!! So when you continuously use products with silicone and apply heat, you can burn and damage the hair. Silicone also clogs the pores, which can cause breakouts on the skin.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is chemical used in detergent, soaps, shower gels and shampoos; it allows the product to foam and lather. The Bad and the Ugly: This ingredient strips the skin of its natural moisture, which causes dryness and irritation to the skin and scalp. It is also known to cause hair loss.

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen (poison). You can usually find this in nail polish and hair straightening/smoothing products (like the Brazilian Blow Out). The Bad and the Ugly: It is known to be an irritant on the skin and cause allergic reactions like dermatitis. The chemical can also cause sensitivity to nose and eyes as well as breathing difficulties.

So there you have it: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Behind The Ingredients! Did anything surprise you? Will you take a closer look at the ingredients during your next beauty excursion? Comment below and share your thoughts…

4 Real Skincare?

A few months ago I was gifted a few products from Big Girl Cosmetics from the new skincare range called 4 Real Women 4 Real Skin 4 real Needs 4 Real Results. I was really intrigued as I am only familiar with the makeup and the spa.

In case you are not as familiar with Big Girl Cosmetics as I am, let me give you the background and 411 on the brand. Big Girl Cosmetics is a local brand based in Chicago. The founder Kiley Russell started out as an Assistant Principal making products in her kitchen and giving them as gifts to her friends and family. She soon realized that her true passion was not teaching; it was beauty.

During her career as a teacher, she was invited to the Oprah show for teacher appreciation day with the car giveaway and you know what happened on that show…everyone received a car! Instead of keeping the car, she decided to sell it and start Big Girl Cosmetics.

Now that you have been fully informed, let me tell you about the product. I have been using the Grapefruit Foaming Face Wash for a few months now and I was a little leery because I am very particular about my face wash and anything that looks like a gel is just too much for my sensitive skin; it usually dries and irritates my skin. But this face wash foams and so I was willing to give it a try and Kiley also talked me into it. LOL.

Here’s the Glam: The Grapefruit Foaming Face Wash is great for combination skin types as it is very gentle and effective. It removes all my extra oil without drying my skin. It helps to nourish my dry areas and it keeps my breakouts to a minimum. A little goes a long way and it smells very refreshing!

IMG_2419Here’s the Slam: Insert crickets here because I really love everything about this cleanser!

In case you have not guessed by now, my final grade for the Grapefruit Foaming Face Wash is 5 out of 5 smooches…MUAH! This cleanser is more than what I expected and I can’t wait to try the other products! If you are interested in tying the Grapefruit Foaming Face Wash by Big Girl Cosmetics, you can purchase it on for $24.00. Happy Cleansing!
